Earth Day is water day.

Unfortunately, the Upper Snake River headwaters have less of it this spring than any time in recorded history. That means less dilution for our pollution and hotter water for our cold-loving trout.

Simple things you can do to mitigate the drought for our beloved river:

-Compost food waste to eliminate the use of garbage disposals
-inspect and pump your septic system
-Pick up pet waste and trash it
-Reduce fertilization
-Maintain a buffer of un-manicured landscaping beside water
-Replace lawns with native grass meadows

Last Tap Into Science of the season happens Monday at 6:30 pm at . Our speaker will be Preston Konop with the Wyoming Engineers Office, which administers all the water rights in our arid state.

Preston will explain how these rights work and how the Snake River Compact with Idaho works, which is increasingly on people’s minds these days.

Come learn! While you drink! Free beer to the first 20! 🤠

Here’s another quick profile of a POWJH staffer, this time the inimitable , our Development Director, who deftly keeps the wheels on our financial bus when he’s not yanking trout out of the local waters. He seriously caught five fish in the fifteen minutes we were standing next to Flat Creek behind Smith’s. The man’s a magician.

Hear About the River You’re Putting Through Your Liver! 😲💧🌊

On Monday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 pm at , Tap Into Science presents Alex Stacy’s discussion “Evaluating approaches to flow ramp-down in a complex floodplain system.”

Stacy and her colleagues at Idaho State University’s Stream Ecology Center have spent the last two summers studying the Snake River ramp-downs, when officials in charge of the Jackson Lake dam dramatically reduce river flows over four or five days, based on irrigation needs in Idaho.

Stacy hopes to understand the effects of such ramp downs on fish and macro-invertebrates, and what difference it makes to shorten or lengthen the ramp-down periods.

If you fish the Snake, this should definitely pique your interest … Also, first 20 guests get a free beer!

POWJH’s Staff video series continues with Water Resource Director , who sums us our JH H2O situation nicely in this clip.

Matt’s our science guy, overseeing water monitoring projects and working closely with agencies to identify and address the threats to our drinking and surface waters.

Truly POWJH’s secret weapon, Matt also likes long walks in the forest and quiet canoe trips with camera guys.
