Janie Carp, our Art Therapist, is sharing a thoughtful new post inspired by a question a client recently asked her: what's the real difference between teaching art and practicing art therapy?

As someone trained and credentialed in both, Janie breaks it down beautifully. Art education follows standards and skill-building goals, learning the elements and principles of art, growing technical ability with different media. Art therapy is something else entirely: it's built on rapport, therapeutic goals, and using the art-making process itself as a tool for healing and growth. 🎨

Thank you to University School of Jackson for inviting The STAR Center to be part of Expo Day!

We are always grateful for opportunities to connect with students, share the mission of The STAR Center, and talk about the many ways our community can get involved and help us .

Today came with an extra special bonus as we shared space with the The Jackson Symphony in Jackson, TN and one of our own Dancing with the STARS Presented by Leaders Credit Union dancers, James Matthew Wyatt!

We love seeing the incredible organizations, businesses, and community members who make Jackson such a special place. Thank you, USJ, for giving us the opportunity to be part of your day!

What if a favorite memory could become a song?

One of our music therapists, Will, recently shared a beautiful success story about a individual served who has been working on communication and memory recall during individual music therapy sessions.

During a recent session, the student recalled details from a trip he had taken with his grandparents. With encouragement and support, he turned those memories into the lyrics of his very own song.

He chose the instruments he wanted to use, performed alongside them and recorded his song. When the recording was shared with his grandparents, they were thrilled to hear the special song their grandson had created.

For this student, music therapy was more than making music. It gave him a meaningful opportunity to practice communication, strengthen memory recall and share something special with the people he loves.

These are the moments that remind us why access to programs like music therapy matter. Behind every session is a person discovering new ways to communicate, build skills, connecting with others and realizing their potential.

And behind those opportunities are the people who believe in our mission and help make them possible.
