Yesterday, February 1, the National EMS Memorial Service Honor Guard lost one of our own, Tim Shanks, after a courageous battle with ALS.

Tim was a member of the GMR Mississippi Honor Guard family, Retired (30 years of service) Deputy Chief of Training for the Clinton Fire Department (MS) and EMT for AMR Central Mississippi for nearly 30 years. He was an Eagle Scout, member of the Order of the Arrow and avid runner of 1/2 marathons. He would do anything for anyone, always the first to volunteer to help those in need.

Tim was loved and will be missed terribly by his family, friends, EMS colleagues and the National EMS Memorial Service Honor Guard Family.

A Servant is defined as a person who performs duties for others. Tim Shanks lived his life in service to others. Through his commitment to the Scouting network, his dedication to his community through the fire service and EMS, and his commitment to stand in silent service with the GMR Honor Guard his impact has been profound. We mourn this loss with our community. Please pray for Tim’s family and friends.

Our REACH family is devastated to share that Susan “Suzie” Smith has passed away from injuries sustained during the accident involving helicopter N414RX on Highway 50 on Monday night.

We will remember Suzie as a pillar of the EMS and healthcare community who saved countless lives by delivering compassionate care in their darkest hours. Suzie’s 50-year career as a nurse included nearly 21 years with REACH, and we are proud to call her our colleague and friend. We hope she is remembered for the light she brought to every call, every shift, and every patient she blessed with her care.

We grieve Suzie’s loss with her family, friends, colleagues and the entire community that she faithfully served. Her impact will be felt for years to come through the lives she touched, the teams she strengthened, and the compassion she embodied. Thank you for keeping Suzie’s loved ones and our REACH family in your thoughts and support for our team during this difficult time.

This year our NEMSMS Honor Guard grew to over 200 personnel! We are very grateful for the support and dedication of all of our volunteers who make the Weekend of Honor a weekend of love and support for the families and loved ones of our fallen.
