The SHIFT Summit is an annual festival, now being hosted in Grand Junction, Colorado, that explores issues at the intersection of outdoor recreation, conservation, land management, & public health. SHIFT explores the intersection of conservation, outdoor recreation and inclusion to build a fierce coalition, representative of America, to protect our public lands. New in 2016, SHIFT’s Emerging Leade

rs Program brought together 34 leaders in the outdoors ages 19-31. The Emerging Leaders were a demographical mirror of America. Urban millennials and people of color—the demographics identified by land managers, the outdoor rec industry and conservation advocates as the keys to the next generation of stewards—worked alongside their Caucasian counterparts to lead the Festival’s conversations. This evolution of traditional conservation became the Festival’s highlight. The Emerging Leaders represented organizations from Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, Latino Outdoors, The Wilderness Society, Sierra Club Outdoors, and Conservation Legacy, to the National Park Service and Bureau of Reclamation, among others. A primary objective for 2017 is to support this diverse, dynamic collection of leaders to bring together stakeholders in their home communities to build consensus around outdoor issues, thus serving as ambassadors for SHIFT.

Join us for a dynamic and timely webinar exploring the intersection of climate resilience, human health, and the essential work of Parks & Recreation professionals. As climate change accelerates, extreme weather—heat waves, poor air quality, intense storms—poses increasing risks to outdoor workers responsible for maintaining our vital green spaces. This session will shine a spotlight on the unique challenges faced by park maintenance teams who labor outdoors regardless of conditions.

The webinar will feature a brief introduction, a facilitated group conversation, and the sharing of new insights from a 2024 uniform study conducted in partnership with the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and the City of Atlanta. The study highlights how uniform design, material selection, and workplace practices can better support worker health and comfort in the face of rising temperatures and climate extremes.

We’ll explore key climate adaptation strategies and ask critical questions: What immediate changes can we implement to better protect our teams? What long-term solutions must we invest in now? And how can health, equity, and environmental stewardship align in the future of Parks & Recreation?

Whether you're a parks leader, public health advocate, designer, or frontline worker, this conversation will offer practical takeaways and inspiration for building a more resilient, people-centered approach to climate adaptation in public spaces.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the conversation shaping the future of healthy, climate-resilient parks.

Our Story

We are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction in the planet’s history. The past five have wiped out between 75% and 96% of the planet’s species. Today, species are disappearing 1,000 times faster than in pre-human times.

Technology has simultaneously sparked what author Florence Williams, in The Nature Fix, calls the “biggest mass migration in human history”—a migration indoors, behind screens. This in turn has led to a population that simply doesn’t care about the future of the natural world. Why should it, if it doesn’t go outside?

Outdoor recreation fosters appreciation for the natural world, mental and physical wellbeing and positive social connections. The Center for Jackson Hole is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to use outdoor recreation to strengthen the coalition of interests dedicated to the protection of the natural world.

We achieve this mission via two main programs: SHIFT (Shaping How we Invest ForTomorrow), an annual festival, held each autumn in Jackson Hole, that explores issues at the intersection of outdoor recreation, conservation, public health and cultural relevancy; and The Emerging Leaders Program, which trains a culturally diverse group of young outdoor recreationists to help lead our work at SHIFT and in America.
