Safe Wildlife Crossings for Jackson Hole

Safe Wildlife Crossings for Jackson Hole Join the movement to prevent wildlife-vehicle collisions and make Jackson Hole a leader in conservation. What are wildlife crossings?

We've all seen too many dead animals on the side of the road. Nearly all of us know someone who's been in a wildlife-vehicle collision, and nearly half of us have experienced that trauma personally. Furthermore, the high rate of wildlife-vehicle collisions in Jackson Hole indicates that our roads are threatening the survival of our wildlife by fragmenting their habitat. We need a plan to keep our

roadways safe for our families and wildlife, and to protect wildlife habitat from further development. SWC for Jackson Hole successfully advocated for the creation of a Teton County Wildlife Crossings Master Plan (to be released in 2017). Now we need to show our elected officials that we want it funded! Wildlife crossings are bridges and tunnels designed to help wildlife safely across the road. Combined with high fences along roads to funnel animals to the crossings, wildlife crossings can reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions by nearly 90% and have proven to be the most effective measure to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions across America and around the world.

“Voting YES to fund the Wildlife Crossings SPET makes sense, whether you are motivated by a human safety perspective, a fiscally responsible angle, or because you want to support the one tenet that this community has supported over and over in Comprehensive Plans and Land Development Regulations – the protection of wildlife.”
– Barbara Allen, Safe Wildlife Crossings PAC Chair

Recently, the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission approved $1.25 million for underpasses to reduce mule deer-vehicle collisions along Highway 189, north of LaBarge.

Known as the Dry Piney project, the planned underpasses will impact a 5-mile stretch of highway between mile markers 86-91. That section of highway has one of the highest wildlife collision rates in Wyoming.

The Commission’s allocation is set to be supported with additional funds from the Wyoming Department of Transportation and other stakeholders. The first phase of the project will install two underpasses and associated fencing, projected to reduce collisions by 85-90 percent.
