June 23, 1943 in President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the "American Commission for the Protection and Salvage of Artistic and Historic Monuments in War Areas. A group of 345 men and women from 13 countries comprised the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Section unit. They spent 1945 seeking out more than 1,000 troves containing an estimated 5 million pieces of artwork and cultural items stolen from wealthy Jews, museums, universities, and religious institutions. For six years after the surrender, a smaller group of about 60 Monuments Men continued scouring Europe as art detectives

The Monuments Men Bronze Medal features a portrayal of soldiers in action, lifting and removing objects from a cave or mine location where the Monuments Men discovered stolen works on the obverse. June 23 1894 In Prince Edward of York who later became King Edward VIII was born at White Lodge, Richmond Park, on the outskirts of London during the reign of his great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

On this day in 1894, Edward VIII was born.

Edward was known for becoming the first British monarch to voluntarily renounce their position. The shockwaves were felt in every area of British public life, including The Royal Mint, where production of the coinage of Edward VIII had been scheduled to start at 8am on 1 January 1937. The abdication put paid to these plans and no coins of Edward VIII were ever issued in the United Kingdom.

Today, on International Women in Engineering Day, meet Elsie MacGill, Canada’s first woman professional engineer. 🍁

Known as “Queen of the Hurricanes” she was chief aeronautical engineer for the Canadian production of Hawker Hurricane fighter planes at Thunder Bay’s Canadian Car & Foundry. She oversaw the production of 1,450 aircrafts during the height of the Second World War.😲

June 23 = National Pink Day

Each year on June 23rd, National Pink Day colors the world in vibrant shades of pink and explores everything it represents. First used as a color name in the late 17th century, pink is a pale red color which got its name from a flower of same name.

It’s and that many of our old bank notes were pink? OK, maybe they were officially terracotta or rose or claret or orchid, but for today, we’re going to call them pink. This 1935 note, with our young future Queen, was most definitely pink, though one could call it orchid (or fuchsia, or rose or...).

June 23, 1943 in 's Canada’s transatlantic flights began Voo-Doo (aircraft) was towed by a Dakota of the RAF fitted with additional fuel tanks.

Canada’s🍁 first transatlantic flight service began n 1943 with Trans Canada Airlines. Mail and military VIPs were flown from Gander, NL in passenger versions of the Lancaster bomber, the aircraft on this coin. The flights took 13 hours, were cold and incredibly noisy. They were also risky.

June 23, 1817 in , John Richardson and eight merchants signed the Articles of Association to establish The Bank of Montreal (the Montreal Bank) in a rented house in Montreal, Quebec. The signors of the document include Robert Armour, John C. Bush, Austin Cuvillier, George Garden, Horatio Gates, James Leslie, George Moffatt, John Richardson, and Thomas A. Turner. The bank officially began conducting business on November 3 1817, making it Canada's oldest bank.

Originally the Montreal Bank, it is now the Bank of Montreal or BMO.
