Local Scouting America Troops Honor Worn Flags with Dignified Retirement Ceremony
JACKSON, MO – In a powerful display of respect and civic duty, local Scouting America Troops 311 and 131, along with participating Cub Scout Packs, held their annual flag retirement campout, ensuring hundreds of worn American flags met a dignified end.
The ceremony is a key service provided to their Chartering Organization, American Legion Post 158 of Jackson, Missouri, which also serves as a community collection point for flags that are no longer fit for display.
A Night of Service and Fellowship
This year’s event saw a large turnout, as Troops 311 (for boys) and 131 (for girls) hosted Cub Scouts from Packs 12, 312, 16, and 20. Pack 12 is a Family Cub Scout Pack, including both boys and girls.
The campout was generously hosted by a Troop 311 Assistant Scout Master, offering ample space for camping, communal campfires, and the necessary fires for the retirement ceremony. Cub Scouts who needed a night of camping were welcomed, enjoying classic camp activities like a warm campfire, S'mores, biscuit donuts, and storytelling.
Honoring the Stars and Stripes
The core purpose of the night was the solemn retirement of the flags. The preferred and time-honored method of disposal is ceremonial burning, conducted in a respectful and dignified manner.
An estimated four to five hundred flags were retired during the evening. Among them was one particularly large flag, believed to have once flown at Cape County Park.
The efforts of the young scouts did not go unnoticed by the leadership of their Chartering Organization. Kevin McMeel, the Charter Organization Representative and Post 158's 1st Vice Commander, was on hand to observe the ceremony.
When asked about the performance of the troops, Mr. McMeel offered high praise, stating:
“They started off good and got better as the night went on.”
The annual campout reinforces the commitment of Jackson's Scouting America community to citizenship, respect for the national emblem, and essential service to their sponsoring American Legion Post.
