Before the current Hinds County Courthouse rose downtown, an essential city service operated at the corner of Pascagoula and President streets —Jackson’s early ambulance service operated as part of Hardy Funeral Home.

In the early 1900s, these life-saving vehicles weren’t called ambulances at all, but “invalid carriages”. Long before modern emergency response as we know it today, these carriages were already playing a vital role in caring for the community.

Another fascinating glimpse into how Downtown Jackson has always been at the center of service, innovation and progress.

Flashback Friday 📸🌳

The man behind one of Downtown’s most beloved green spaces comes into focus in this historic moment.

James Smith, namesake of Smith Park, is shown standing in a Scottish marble works, overseeing the creation of a monument for his brother.

His brother was killed in the Civil War, and the monument was sent across the ocean to Jackson’s Greenwood Cemetery, where it still stands today.

It’s a story of family, remembrance and the global connections woven into Downtown Jackson’s history.

Flashback Friday 🖤

Shortly after the Civil War, a group of Freedmen pause for a powerful moment in front of the Mississippi Capitol Building on State Street in Downtown Jackson.

Captured around 1870, this photograph reflects a pivotal chapter in our city’s story—one of resilience, transition, and hope during Reconstruction.

History lives here. And it matters.
