Congratulations to our newest members who recently received their badges and officially completed their probationary year with Jackson Hole Fire/EMS.

Over the past year, these members dedicated countless hours to training and education, completing certifications in Basic Life Support, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Wildland Firefighting (S-130/S-190), Emergency Medical Technician, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Firefighter I. Along the way, they also served monthly ambulance shifts to gain hands-on experience, trained weekly with their home stations, and responded to emergencies whenever called upon.

Earning a badge represents far more than completing a checklist, it reflects a year of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment to serving our community. During the ceremony, two members were also recognized for their outstanding performance during the most recent Firefighter I Academy. Peter Long received the Outstanding Academic Firefighter Award, while Colby Carpenter was honored as the Outstanding Fireground Performer.

Please join us in congratulating all of these members on this important milestone and thanking them for their dedication to protecting and caring for our community!

Every year, our firefighters complete the Pack Test to demonstrate the physical fitness and endurance required for the job. This consists of a 3 mile hike while carrying a 45lb pack, completed in 45 minutes or less.

The test is designed to measure the aerobic capacity, muscular strength, and endurance needed to perform demanding work in challenging conditions. Because of the test distance and energy cost, Pack Tests are an excellent indicator of the capacity to perform prolonged arduous work under adverse conditions with a reserve to meet unforeseen fireline emergencies.

This training directly translates to real world experience. Today, 87 members hold a Red Card qualification, allowing them to respond to wildland fire incidents. Earlier this season, our Type 3 engine was assigned to the Spread Creak Fire for two days. With three firefighters staffing the engine each day, the local assignment provided valuable hands on experience for six members of our department.

Another milestone achieved πŸ‘

Our Advanced EMT and EMT-Intermediate classes recently graduated 9 students, including 7 from Jackson Hole Fire/EMS, 1 from Grand Teton National Park, and 1 from Sublette County Unified Fire. Over the course of the program, students completed more than 120 hours of classroom and lab instruction, along with 120+ hours of clinical experience in the ER and on ambulances.

These newly certified providers are now trained in Advanced Life Support (ALS) skills including advanced airway management, IV medication administration, advanced cardiology assessment and treatment, and other critical care procedures.

Their dedication, hard work, and commitment to serving others will make a lasting impact on our community. Congratulations to all of our new ALS providers! πŸš‘

Jackson Hole Fire/EMS crews responded to a structure fire at Teton Pines early this morning. One firefighter was injured falling off a structure and was subsequently taken to St. John's Health where they are in stable condition.

During National EMS Week, we're proud to recognize the emergency medical professionals who are often the first to arrive when help is needed most.

This year, the Foundation is honored to sponsor Firefighter/EMT Erika Voorhees as she completes her paramedic certification at Weber State University. Supporting education and training opportunities like this is an investment into the future of emergency response in our community.

One of her most rewarding parts of the training has been "learning and growing as a provider along side new lifelong friends from different agencies and different backgrounds." When faced with hard days she reminds herself that she "chose to do this and it's supposed to be hard. Not every day is easy, but they are all worth it. Sometimes we need to weather our own storm so that we can be better prepared to support our community during their hard days."

EMTs provide critical medical care during emergencies and their dedication helps keep our community safe every day. Please join us in thanking all EMS professionals for their skill and commitment.

Another Firefighter 1 Academy Class in the books! This week's focus: heat, smoke, and real world scenarios.

Using pallets and hay to create realistic interior fire conditions, members practiced navigating and attacking fires in scenarios designed to mirror what they may encounter. The Firefighter 1 Academy is an intense program that combines academic coursework, the introduction to the tools and techniques of the trade, and the testing of physical and mental fitness.

The Foundation kept the Jackson Hole Fire/EMS members fueled with tamales for lunch while they trained hard to serve our community.

Two Jackson Hole Fire/EMS team members attended the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis last month. The conference brings together fire service professionals from across the globe to learn the latest tactics, techniques, and leadership lessons.

The Foundation covered all expenses, including airfare, lodging, meals, and transportation, ensuring our firefighters could focus entirely on learning. When the Foundation invests in training, the benefits ripple far beyond the individuals who attend. New skills are brought home to be shared across the department and ultimately strengthen the safety and preparedness of the entire community.

Their biggest takeaway? Practical, real world knowledge that can be put to use immediately. Just days after returning, team member Warren Newton led a search lecture to share new techniques and insights with fellow responders.

Members of the 2026 Firefighter 1 Academy participate in a class preparing them to respond to vehicle fires and other outdoor fire emergencies.

The Firefighter 1 Academy is an intense program that combines academic coursework, the introduction to the tools and techniques of the trade, and the testing of physical and mental fitness. The academy only provides a foundation; every worthy firefighter spends their entire career learning, training, and improving their skills so they can continue serving and protecting their community.

The Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Foundation provided a BBQ lunch for the Academy class, one of the many ways we help support the Jackson Hole Fire/EMS team.
