Today the Mississippi Urban League celebrate and honor the fathers in our community who work tirelessly to provide and protect the people around them.

Whether you are a father, grandfather, guardian, father figure, or anything in between, today is a day for you to be acknowledged and appreciated because sometimes it gets difficult to keep it together and your sacrifices sometimes go unseen and unheard. For every moment you struggled in silence, for every time it almost got too hard to continue and yet you still pressed on to lead your family into the future, we thank you.

This Father's Day, we encourage you to take the time out to recognize the fathers in your life who help to shape and mold our families and communities. Your strength and willpower gives us the chance to celebrate, and today's celebration is all about you.

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. Today, we celebrate the anniversary of that day as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, or simply Juneteenth. Today the Mississippi Urban League celebrates the end of American slavery and hopes to educate people on why today is so important to our community and culture.
