Tompkins Learning Partners

Tompkins Learning Partners We are an agency that utilizes volunteer tutors to teach people who have literacy needs and goals.

Since 1976, Tompkins Learning Partners has been providing tutoring services, free of charge, to local residents who need help reading, writing, or speaking English. These services are provided through the many dedicated volunteer tutors who give their time to make a difference in students' lives. The knowledge that students gain allows them to function better in our community, obtain or improve th

eir employment, or continue their education by going on to attend college. Each year over 100 students and tutors work together under our auspices to make student's educational goals happen. In 2015, 86 volunteer tutors donated 6,926 hours of their time to their students. It is easy to see that the strength of Tompkins Learning Partners is the volunteers. A dedicated staff provides support to both students and volunteer tutors to ensure that both of these groups get the help they need to succeed. Funds to provide these services are from grants awarded by Tompkins County and the City of Ithaca, the New York State Education Department, United Way of Tompkins County, and local foundations. Individual donations, donations from organizations, and special fundraising events also help us to keep our doors open. Tompkins Learning Partners is a not-for-profit governed by a board of directors consisting of local residents committed to the cause of literacy in our community.

¿Are We There Yet?: A Compassionate Exploration of Contemporary Immigration, A new documentary film by Ithaca area Producer/Director Thomas Hoebbel will hold a premiere event on October 23rd at 6PM at Cinemapolis in downtown Ithaca, NY.

The documentary first emerged through a collaboration between Jennifer Majka on behalf of Cornell University’s Just Futures Initiative and Kenneth Clarke, director of the Tompkins County Office of Human Rights who are co-producers of the film. Clarke and Majka tapped Thomas Hoebbel, a local photographer and filmmaker, to take on the task of producing a film about immigration.

The film, which originally focused on Ithaca area immigrants and experts, contains multiple interviews conducted with Tompkins County residents who are featured in the film. The project quickly expanded and filming took Hoebbel to Orlando, FL, Boston, MA, as well as Tijuana, Mexico for further interviews with migrants and immigrants to the United States. A final interview was held in August with Orlando Nodarse Hernández, a recent Cuban refugee who was jailed while painting a protest piece in a public square in his town of Viñales Cuba in 2021. Orlando’s immigration application to the US was sponsored by an Ithaca resident and business owner who has also taken an interest in supporting the film.

COMING THIS WEEKEND: SEPTEMBER 28!

Another Ithaca tradition that the pandemic couldn’t kill, or even slow down: Our Annual Finger Lakes Crossword Competition is back again, and, as with last’s year’s event and before the pandemic, the FLCC will be held solely in person. From 1-4 PM, on Saturday, September 28th, 2024, we will again meet in the Boynton Middle School Cafeteria to compete with our friends, neighbors and other crossword enthusiasts in support of Tompkins Learning Partners.

We are very proud to dedicate this year’s event to Dave Smith, who is retiring after 25 years as TLP’s Executive Director. This is a much earned recognition and appreciation of his leadership, guidance, and friendship.

If you’ve played with us before, you’ve been notified by email that the website is live and registration is open. If you are not already on the crossword mailing list and would like more information or to register, go to CrosswordCompetition.com.
