EAA Chapter 811

Starting with this month, EAA Chapter 811's VMC Club will be switching to Third Thursdays of each month at 19:00, under the direction of Eric Hummel from the EHFC. The IMC Club will continue meeting on the First Thursdays with Lucja Kot and Larry Baum as coordinators, and our monthly gatherings will remain on the fourth Tuesdays.

EAA Chapter 811's September gathering will be a fly-in or drive-in barbecue at Ovid Airport D82 on Tuesday, September 22nd. Fly in or drive in, it’s up to you, but put them on your calendars and come on in for good food and pilot talk! Hamburgs and hot dogs and drinks will be provided, bring a dish to pass. I’ll bring the Chapter’s contributions over to Ovid by 17:00 so that we’ll be able to start eating around 17:30. Sundown’s at 19:00, and Civil Twilight ends at 19:30 so we’ll have plenty of time to eat and swap flying stories before dark…
The paved runway is 1/19. If you prefer to land on grass, the parallel runway west of the paved runway is usable. It is marked out by white tires. If winds are calm, plan to land uphill on runway 19. CTAF is 122.8 - please be sure to make your radio calls to announce your intentions.
When you get to Ovid, you can go straight off the taxiway and park on the grass straight ahead, park on the south end of the ramp, or park on the grass south of the taxiway. Please don’t park on the grass north of the taxiway.
If you’re driving in, the Ovid Airport is on Parish Road – from Ithaca, take NY Route 96 north, and Parish Road (CR139) is a left turn. Google Maps shows a “Happy Landing Gas Station” on the corner, and the airport is ¾ of a mile west of the intersection.

Chapter 811's Hangar Block Party at KITH Ithaca Tompkins International Airport on June 23rd went well. We had a good number of attendees, including EAA and East Hill Flying Club members and members of the Aviation Explorer Post, plus a couple of folks from the airport staff. A Good Time was had by all, lots of good food was eaten, and the pilot talk lasted until sunset...

Chapter 811's June gathering will be on Tuesday evening, June 23rd - our annual Hangar Block Party at Ithaca Tompkins International Airport (KITH). We'll start gathering around 17:30, with food available from about 18:00. The chapter will provide hamburgers and hot dogs and soft drinks, bring a dish to pass. The Block Party will center around the former Ithaca Hangar Associates T-hangars, north of the East Hill Flying Club for food, planes and pilot talk. Lots of the hangars will be open and lots of airplanes will be available to look at. All EAA members and friends, East Hill members, Aviation Explorers are welcome - and if you'd like to become one of those, you're welcome, too!

It is with regret to announce that Owasco Airfield and the Owasco Hill RV Campground have been sold. The Airport and Campground are officially closed. The airfield operated for twenty one years and hosted many popular public events. Thank you to the EAA clubs, pilots, and everyone who was a part of the Airfield and to the many campers who camped at the Campground. We will miss you all.

Chapter 811 has a Young Eagles Rally coming up on Saturday May 30th (rain date Sunday May 31st). As of today (Saturday, May 9th) we have 15 Young Eagles registered and six pilots (Tim Fallon, Chris Hansen, Mark Sanford and Art Snyder sharing one airplane, Jack Thompson, Jim Wells and me). Doug Binder has signed up to help as ground crew. If you can help out, either to fly or doing paperwork or safety briefings/preflight introductions on the ground, please let me know.

Our May gathering will be a fly-out brunch at Katy’s Fly-in Restaurant at Great Valley Airport N56 on May 16th (May 17th in case of rain). We’ll plan to arrive at N56 at 10:00. Katy’s page is https://www.facebook.com/Katysflyin/ and their phone number is (716) 265-2040

Great Valley N56 is 99 miles due west of KITH, about 12 miles west of Olean KOLE and 20 miles east of Jamestown VOR.

N56 is at 1,450’ elevation. It has a grass runway 6/24 which is 3,200 feet long by 90 feet wide. The parking area is east of the northeastern end of the runway (approach end of 24), and Katy’s is directly across the road from the airplane parking.
N56 has a CTAF of 122.9. The nearest AWOS is at KOLE – 118.375.

If you’re planning to go to the fly-out brunch, please let me know by Thursday evening so I can call Katy’s on Friday to give them a “heads up”. If you’d like to ride with another pilot, let me know that, too, and I’ll try to arrange it. I’ll have a couple of seats in my 172, if nothing else.
