Gratiot County Historical Museum The museum is located in a 1880 brick home and contains various vintage articles and seasonal displays. It is open May through October on Wed. afternoons.

The museum has a fine collection of furniture from the 19th and 20th centuries. Other collections include quilts, glass, china, kitchen ware, toys, clothing, photos and written records related to the life of the county for over 150 years. The beginnings of Meijer’s

From even before it was Thrifty Acres!

We don't talk a lot about Meijer here, the Michigan-based supercenter chain that's been growing pretty quick across the Midwest. But they've got quite the history as a pioneer in combining general merchandise and food, and this one comes from their early days as a solely food retailer in Western Michigan.

This really cool 1950s pylon-era store was in Grand Rapids, their homebase, and appears to have been located at the corner of Michigan and Fuller St.

In 1962, they'd open the first Thrifty Acres, a 180,000 square feet store that would sell food and general merchandise under one roof. They built it with 6 inch floors so that if it failed, it could be easily converted into a car dealership. It didn't.

Meijer now operates 259 supercenters and supermarkets throughout Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin and has been flirting with potentially moving into the St. Louis and Pittsburgh regions as they've expanded more recently into the Milwaukee and Cleveland areas.

It's my understanding the horse known as Sandy, much like we featured at the Conyngham, PA Gould's Market in the middle of the store is a common fixture within Meijer stores to this day, especially in their home state of Michigan.

A nice remembrance of the bells in St Louis.

A key leader and visionary of the St. Louis Christmas bell displays was Dr. C. J. Bender. During Christmas 1969 Bender helped his neighbor, Mrs. Emma Frost, to hang her Christmas bell. At that time…

Our Log Cabin Story

We have completed the restoration of a log cabin to the museum’s backyard, and it is now ready for viewing. Steps, a handicapped ramp, landscaping and a stone fireplace have recently been added as well as furniture and artifacts. A Log Cabin Grand Opening has been planned for Saturday, August 11, 1-4:00 p.m. with ribbon cutting at 1:00 and refreshments on the museum porch. The Just for Fun Dulcimer Club will be entertaining on the lawn.

The museum is open every Wednesday afternoon from 1-4:00 p.m. as well as some Saturdays May through October.
