Coddington Road Community Center

Coddington Road Community Center Coddington Road Community Center seeks to enrich the mental, physical, and social emotional needs of the children and families in our programs.

The Center introduces educational and wellness experiences and encourages a lifetime love of learning. The Coddington Road Community Center has been a part of the local landscape for many years. In the 1860's a one-room school house was built on the spot now occupied by our "Bear" classroom. By 1948, zoned school districts were created and the school house became known as the Coddington Road Commu

nity Center. First incorporated in 1948, the center was used for many years for community dinners, square dances, youth sports and community fund raisers. Use of the center decreased in the late 1970's until the arrival of three visionary women in the early 1980's. After a community survey, legal research and a great deal of hard work the Coddington Road Community Center was reopened in 1985 as a 501 (c)3 non-profit child care facility and community center. Since then, CRCC has been an integral part of the community with a variety of programming available for children and families.

This week the Oak Room learned about birds. The classroom talked about where they live, what they eat and what differences they have. The students made their own binoculars and then went on several bird walking adventures! During a walk, they saw a hawk, woodpecker, a cardinal and some robins. What birds have you spotted this weekend?

Happy Family Friday! "Engaging and celebrating families is at the heart of supporting our youngest learners." The The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

Today, our Spruce Room infants celebrated by reading the book "Our Class Is a Family" by Shannon Olsen. They also sent home a family activity of creating mess free sensory bags and encouraged each family to send in pictures of their experience.

Our Maple Room preschoolers hosted a family story time and encouraged families to come in and read the class a family favorite book.

Our Oak Room preschoolers brought in photos of their family members to share during circle time. They loved getting to tell their peers a little about each person in their family.

We have had so much fun celebrating this week, and hope that you all have enjoyed following along!

Thursday was full of art and creativity, as we celebrated Artsy Thursday here, at Coddington! "Children develop creativity, social skills, and fine motor skills through open-ended art projects where they can make choices, use their imaginations, and create with their hands." The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

As a center, we transformed our gym space into an art exhibition. Families were able to stop by and view the work of their children during drop off or pick up times. Our classroom groups also took turns viewing these pieces and talking about the different medium types that were used to create these masterpieces.

Today, we celebrated Work Together Wednesday at Coddington. “When children build together they experience teamwork and develop their social and early literacy skills.” The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

The Spruce Room infants worked together to make classroom affirmations. They also did a water sensory table for washing play dishes!

The Maple Room preschoolers worked together to help set up for our family art exhibition tomorrow. Did you know that tomorrow is Artsy Thursday?!

The afterschool program worked together on classroom projects. The gym bulletin board will have a beautiful spring display with all of the students contributing their handprint to make the sun. They are also working together to build a classroom bird house!

As part of the NAEYC Week of the Young Child celebration, today, we celebrated Tasty Tuesday: “This fun, food-themed day is about more than just cheese and crackers. Cooking together connects math with literacy skills, science, and more.” The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

The Spruce Room infants made strawberry banana smoothie popsicles. The infants helped scoop the strawberries and bananas into the mixer. The classroom will enjoy their homemade popsicles later with afternoon snack, although they did enjoy a small smoothie taste test earlier!

The Willow Room toddlers made homemade guacamole! They closely examined the avocado and were very focused on the seed. Each child helped mash the avocado to become an ingredient in the guacamole before enjoying a small spoonful.

The Maple Room preschoolers do a weekly baking project on Thursdays and we can’t wait to see what they make.

The Oak Room preschoolers made banana bread muffins. The classroom reviewed the recipe list. Each child received an ingredient to add to the bowl or participated in banana mashing. This was a great display of teamwork and learning about baking measurements. The tasty banana bread muffins were enjoyed alongside lunch.

We also want to take this day to celebrate a new addition to our team, Julie, our Center Cook! One of Julie’s favorite cooking flavors is Italian, and she is very excited for the upcoming growing season. The children love it when Julie arrives with their nutritious meals and Julie enjoys seeing the joy on their faces as she enters.

As we celebrate Tasty Tuesday, thank you to Julie and all the center staff who dedicate their time to celebrate Week of the Young Child and help our students on the journey of growth, learning and exploration.

Coddington Road Community Center is excited to participate in this year’s Week of the Young Child celebration. Today, we celebrated Music Monday: “When you invite children to sing, dance, and listen to music, you develop their language and early literacy skills while encouraging movement.” The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

The Spruce Room infants made their own maracas and played with different musical instruments to explore the different sounds they make.

The Willow Room toddlers performed a musical instrument parade in our hallway, while singing their ABCs!

The Maple Room preschoolers have been choreographing a dance and movements to the song Over in the Meadow.

The Oak Room preschoolers are planning to celebrate the afternoon with a high energy dance party!

We celebrated Music Monday at school, but you can continue the celebration at home. Read this article from NAEYC titled “Playing with Music at Home,” for fun ideas! We’d love to hear or see photographs of any at home music moments.

It’s a beautiful day to play outside! According to The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), “time spent outside can lead to better physical and mental health, improved sleep, and cognitive, social, and emotional gains for young children.” For more benefits on outdoor play, please read this NAYEC article titled “Rocking and Rolling. Fresh Air, Fun, and Exploration: Why Outdoor Play Is Essential for Healthy Development,” by Kathy Kinsner.
