The K-12 Education program is a growing series of educational resources that promote inquiry and science learning in the classroom and at home by focusing youth on observations of birds and the natural world. Through the K-12 Education program and resources...

* Students engage in authentic inquiry through citizen science! They carefully observe birds and ask and answer their own questions ba

sed on observations and data.
* Youth use technology and real data to send and receive data about birds, which helps scientists better understand birds. In fact, that all students are encouraged to submit their data to CLO citizen science projects, for use by professional scientists in national and international surveys of bird population and behavior!
* Youth benefit from the added restorative and cognitive benefits of time spent outdoors in nature!

Taking a look back at one of our highlights of the summer: the K-12 Educator Retreat in the Marin Headlands of California 😎

4 days, 27 educators, lots of birding and learning from one another! Our week was filled with so many great conversations about getting students outdoors and engaging in participatory science with the help of the K-12 curricula.

All of this was made possible from the support of generous donations. We would also like to thank our sponsor Celestron, for providing each of our attendees with a brand new pair of binoculars, making each outdoor experience all the more memorable.

And of course, thank you to our educators for making the retreat an amazing experience. We are so inspired by the impact each of you have on your students and honored to support your important work!

Our K-12 Team is still flying high from an amazing four days spent right here at the Lab birding, learning, and collaborating with educators!

With the support of our donors, we were able to cover travel and lodging expenses for 26 educators from across the U.S. and Canada, making this opportunity more accessible than ever.

Each of our attendees also received a pair of Nature DX 8x42mm binoculars, thanks to our friends at Celestron! These powerful tools helped our group experience the natural beauty of Ithaca, NY and imagine creative outdoor learning experiences for their students back home.

Last but certainly not least, thank you to all the educators for joining us at the retreat and bringing your passion and enthusiasm for your work – we’re so grateful for all you do!

Learning to identify birds by their silhouette is one of the best tools in a birder's tool kit. Paying close attention to size, shape, and behavior can be just as informative as colorful plumage. Sharpen your power of observation and challenge a young scientist in your life to do the same with this hands-on activity from our Feathered Friends resource!

Thanks to Pennington Wild Bird Seed for helping us make fun and engaging activities like these available to you at no cost by sponsoring science education
