First Generation Student Union FGSU is committed to making sure first-generation, low-income students at Cornell University find a "First, but not alone."

By and for first-generation students, the Cornell First Generation Student Union (FGSU) is a student-run organization at Cornell University supporting and celebrating first generation students through events, support groups and professional and social development. We hold meetings every Monday, from 4:30-5:30pm, within the Latino Studies Program (LSP) Conference Room, 4th floor of Rockefeller Hall.

Hi family! It is with a heavy heart we come to you today. FGSU recognizes how debilitating the last couple of days have been. And although there is nothing we can do to lessen the hurt of losing one of our own, we do want to offer you all a space where you can be loved on and cared for. M.J. Larrazabal identities as a first-generation Latinx woman on the pursuit of the American Dream. A formerly Undocumented-turned-DACA recipient, MJ recently achieved a life goal: becoming a US citizen.

This timely talk offers students an opportunity to explore the intersection of their various identities and consider the importance of voting rights and the impact of elections on those who cannot vote.

Join the OADI Tuesday Lunch Engagement on October 27 at noon: “The Opportunity in Being First Generation” with Dr. Andrew Martinez."

Dr. Andrew Martinez is a college success manager for KIPP New York supporting the persistence and success of students from his community in the Bronx as they navigate their college careers. He recently earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in Education where he studied the experiences of first-generation low-income Latinx students applying to graduate school. He is also an alumnus of Cornell University where he majored in Sociology.

We are one of 170+ affinity, cultural, and professional student organizations a part of the Cornell for Black Lives Coalition that is committed to utilizing their networks to amplify the black voices on campus in promoting activism and education to combat both blatant and implicit racism. As FGSU we are proud members of this coalition.

Acknowledging our financial privilege and resources at Cornell, we have started a fundraiser to support the ongoing movements against racial injustices, addressing both inequality in Ithaca and nationally. All donations will be split equally between Tompkins County Showing Up for Racial Justice, Southside Community Center, Communities United for Police Reform, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Black Lives Matter for Greater New York. Students, friends, family, alumni, and other community members, please show you support if you can donate, share, and check out this initiative for additional resources. With your help, we can magnify our impact to dismantle systems of oppression.
