Restore the Earth Foundation

Restore the Earth Foundation Restore the Earth Foundation, Inc. (REF) is a nonprofit organization restoring the Earth’s essential forest and wetland ecosystems.
(1)

Since 2008, the founders of REF have secured $35 million in private and public funding to reforest over 45,000 acres along the Gulf Coast damaged by Hurricane Katrina. REF was the first to deploy restoration on oil soiled wetlands following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Today, these reforested areas have restored habitat, created jobs, and brought back the landscape’s green attributes and benefits that contribute so much to the nation’s communities and culture.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” reflects how we bring restoration to life every day. Like the ecosystems we work to restore, it begins with a seed, an idea, a partnership, a shared commitment to do something meaningful. Just as a tree grows with the right conditions, our work flourishes through supportive partnerships, collaboration, and care, growing into something lasting.

Restoring landscapes at scale doesn’t happen alone. It takes people coming together. Alongside our partners, we’re working toward restoring 1 million acres of degraded ecosystems across the Mississippi River Valley.

These efforts create real, lasting impact, from cleaner water and air to stronger biodiversity, increased carbon sequestration, greater resilience to storms and flooding, and more access to nature for communities.

Today, we’re celebrating the power of working together. Every contribution helps something bigger take root and grow. Thank you to this incredible community, we are so grateful to be doing this work together.

With 400,000 acres completed to date, Restore the Earth has the experience, the technical logistics, supply pipeline, expert partners and grit to get the job done.

We’re currently planting 13,000 acres (Feb 2026-April 2026), and are always learning along the way. This year our partners EcoRestore introduced this new tech that innovates on how we stage tree stakes and other materials at planting sites, saving time and costs which means we can direct more resources towards restoration.

📣Restore the Earth in the news!📣

Restore the Earth & our partners have been featured for our work in expanding public lands. Hundreds of acres have been added to three Wildlife Management Areas across the state, including land incorporated into the Salvador Wildlife Management Area in St. Charles Parish.

Protecting and restoring landscapes like these supports wildlife, strengthens coastal ecosystems, and ensures these lands remain available for future generations to enjoy. We are proud to play a role in this work and grateful to the many partners helping protect Louisiana’s coast.

Thanks to our partners at Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Trust for Public Land. And to Elise Plunk at Louisiana Illuminator for the story.

Three public hunting and conservation areas in Louisiana grew by hundreds of acres Wednesday after the state Wildlife and Fisheries Commission approved a series of real estate deals. The expansions ra...

📣 Attention Louisiana residents! We are thrilled to be registering our project at the Salvador Wildlife Management Area near Luling, Louisiana through the Verra Verified Carbon Standard. As part of the process, a team of auditors will tour the project area and review project documentation to assess the project design, carbon calculations, community impacts, and biodiversity impacts of the project. They welcome any feedback or insights from stakeholders.

If you are local to the project site and would like to provide comments or request information, you may contact the auditor or project management team through the following contact information before March 23, 2026.

We couldn’t resist tapping in on the 2016 nostalgia trend as 2016 was a special year at Restore the Earth Foundation. It marked the beginning of our boots in the mud work to restore 1 million acres of degraded forest and wetland ecosystems in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, or as we like to call it, North America’s Amazon.

It’s incredibly rewarding to look back on how far our tree babies have come over the past 10 years. From the groundbreaking with our amazing partners to the flourishing trees we see today, we’re so proud of the progress we’ve made together.

It’s also exciting to reflect on how far large-scale ecosystem restoration work has developed overall, with many others doing this important work nationally and internationally. Carbon and nature markets have evolved significantly, creating new ways to recognize and finance long-term impact. Going into 2026, we’re excited about what that means for the future of this work.

Swipe to see the trees grow!

Hurricane Katrina - a milestone cemented in the history of New Orleans and the coastal communities impacted by its devastation. Here time is marked by "before Katrina" and "after Katrina", a reminder of what has been lost and all that has happened since.

REF was born out of this disaster in an effort to help the recovery efforts the best we could. We worked with local partners to kick start restoration efforts to help return the thousands of acres of wetlands and forests lost, which for many represented their livelihood, identity and culture. And we're still at it.

Today we join hands with these communities as we remember.

Hurricane Katrina resulted in nearly 1,400 deaths, according to revised statistics from the National Hurricane Center, and remains the costliest storm in U.S. history at around $200 billion in today's dollars.
