Faculty Feature Friday: Nate Silas Richardson

Welcome to Nate Silas Richardson, our new guitar instructor! As a multi-instrumentalist, with a focus on guitar, he has recorded and toured internationally with Sim Redmond Band, 10ft G***a Plant, and John Brown’s Body. A musical omnivore, he holds a BA in Jazz Composition from Berklee College of Music, and has an affinity for African guitar styles, American folk, rock and jazz, and Jamaican reggae. He can be seen locally with various groups, including The Makers, Joe Crookston, Pierce Walsh and others. Catch him playing trio jazz most Wednesdays at the Argos Inn.

Fun fact: Nate loves when people accidentally make up new words, or use words in weird or “wrong” ways that make perfect sense. If you do this, he knows you will be a friend!

Faculty Feature Friday: Diego Vásquez

Our new clarinet instructor, Dr. Diego Vásquez, is an interdisciplinary musician who loves to play the clarinet and twerk. He is Principal Clarinet of both the Berkshire Opera Festival and Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, and is currently serving on the faculties of Ithaca College and Cornell University. His debut EP, “Dr Diego,” was released in 2022 from the seeds of classic deep house, disco, chiptunes and baroque organ music.

Fun fact: Much of Diego’s work involves dance. This month, he is scheduled to perform Inori with the New Westphalian Philharmonic in Essen, Germany!

Faculty Feature Friday: Kathy Judd, violin

Welcome to Kathy Judd, our new violin instructor! Kathy is a versatile artist who has led a diverse career as a violinist, educator, and arts administrator. She comes to us from Washington DC, where she dedicated 25 years to teaching at the Washington Conservatory of Music and also served as Artistic and Executive Director.

A Kansas native, she earned her Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from New England Conservatory of Music and a 3-year Master of Musical Arts degree from Yale University.

Fun facts: A believer in the power of humor, she once sold six one-liners to comedienne Joan Rivers, and as a lover of adventure travel, she has camped in the Amazon Rainforest, trekked to the top of Kilimanjaro, kayaked in Vietnam, hoed potatoes in Scotland, hiked in the Himalayas, and ridden camels in the Sahara Desert!

🎶 It all begins here. To get to Mozart, Chaminade, Ibert and more—one must start with the great folk songs in the Suzuki repertoire along with the great Bach-Petzold minuets and more! Liz Shuhan, who started the Suzuki flute program at Opus enjoys teaching her young students. You will also find her at Opus coaching and teaching her advanced students who enter competitions, prepare for college auditions and perform in the community. It is a joy to hear all of the flutes in the building each week! 👏😊
