28 years ago, Matthew Shepard was targeted, brutally attacked, and stolen from the world at just 21 years old simply because he was gay. Found tied to a remote fence on October 7, 1998, he succumbed to his injuries six days later.
Matthew was a son, brother, and friend who deserved to live fully and safely. In the wake of his tragedy, his memory ignited powerful movement: Romaine Patterson created the Angel Action Network to block out anti-LGBTQ+ hate groups, and his parents, Judy and Dennis Shepard, fought tirelessly until the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act was signed into law in 2009. After decades without a permanent resting place due to fears of vandalism, Matthew was finally laid to rest at the Washington National Cathedral in 2018.
Here in Tompkins County, the Ithaca Pride Alliance carries forward this legacy of resilience, protection, and unconditional love. We stand, we remember, and we protect our community against hate in all its forms.
Rest in peace, Matthew. You will never be forgotten.
