Ithaca Asian Women's Network

Ithaca Asian Women's Network Women supporting women. Welcome to the Asian Women's Network! We are a support network of women, primarily of Asian descent, for women and their families.

Our network invites all women to join, learn, be active and to strengthen their identities. We are a multi-generational and multi-cultural group of women who live in the upstate New York region. We come together to build a network that enriches and empowers each other's lives. We invite you to join us! You are not alone! Please contact Satomi Hill at [email protected] or Mimi Melegrito at mimim

[email protected] to learn more! We hope to see you at our next gathering! History of the Asian Women's Network:

The Asian Women's Network was officially formed in 2009 under the leadership of Satomi Hill, a local Okinawan/Japanese woman, along with her three friends Mimi Melegrito, Irene Tay and Cynthia Santos. These four women are long-standing members of the Ithaca community who all felt the need for connection, support and the sharing of information and experiences to build a stronger Asian community for women in the area. What we do:
-We hold regular social gatherings to strengthen and enrich our lives. -We are also active in participating and volunteering in community events and organizations.
-We help to provide information on resources to newcomers, and can also help with some language translation. In 2011, we made various efforts to raise relief funds for the triple disaster (earthquake-tsunami-nuclear crisis) in Japan. In our March 2011 gathering, we raised $1160 by donating 580 paper cranes to Students Rebuild in March 2011. (http://studentsrebuild.org/japan/, http://www.facebook.com/papercranesforjapan). On March 31, courtesy of CT Bento on Elmira Street, we were able to raise even more funds.

Please join Carol Zou, Director of Programs, Asian Arts Initiative, from Philadelphia, PA, on Thursday, 11/16/17, at 6:00 pm in Klingenstein Lounge.

Visual culture does not exist separate from politics, but rather is an integral aspect of the ways in which social, political, and economic shifts occur. This lecture traces the history of United States-based cultural organizing beginning from the civil rights era, and considers tactics and strategies that are relevant to the contemporary sociopolitical climate. Artists/movements examined will include: Emory Douglas and the Black Panther Party, the Chicano art movement, ACT UP, Favianna Rodriguez/CultureStrike, Black Lives Matter, and the presenter's own history of working with grassroots community building in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Philadelphia.

Carol Zou is a Texangelena by way of the Chinese diaspora. She is known for organizing the art collective Yarn Bombing Los Angeles, a collective ranging from 20 to 500 crafters that creates public art through a crowdsourced, participatory model. Beginning June 2015, she is the project manager/artist-in-residence for Trans.lation, an arts and cultural platform initiated by Rick Lowe and commissioned by the Nasher Sculpture Center, located in the immigrant, refugee, Latino, and African American neighborhood of Vickery Meadow, Dallas, Texas.

Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Penny Bogardus at [email protected] or (607) 274-1056. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.

Come Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration & the Asian/Asian American Story-Telling Project

May is Asian-Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843 and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. Through collaborations between the Ithaca Asian American Association, the Asian Women’s Network, the Multicultural Resource Center and the History Center, we cordially invite you to celebrate APA Month with us and to help us kick-off a Story-Telling Project in the community!

Date: Saturday, May 21, 2016
Time: 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. ( Dinner is provided)
Location: The History Center 401 East State Street, Suite 100, Ithaca, NY.

Parking is available behind the Gateway Center in open spots that do not have signs in front of them. Please park in a spot closer to the State Street hill (to the north of the parking lot than in a spot close to the creek (to the south of the parking lot)

The event is a kick-off for the Asian and Asian American Story-Telling Project here in Tompkins and surrounding Counties as part of the larger community Story-Telling Project of Immigrants, Refugees, Asylees initiated by the Multicultural Resource Center. Join us to celebrate!

Millions of Karen and other ethnic minorities in Burma were displaced due to the internal conflict with the Burma Central Government. Nobel and her family came to the Ithaca in 2009.
