🚣🏽‍♂️ With a little ingenuity and a small fishing boat, our stewardship staff planted over 600 native perennials on the shore of Skaneateles Lake last week. The plantings took place on property that was acquired in 2025 and includes 1,120 feet of streambank on Barber Gulf and a portion of the Staghorn Cliffs.

🌿 This project is part of the Land Trust's ongoing ecological restoration efforts in the region, including the removal of invasive plant species and the planting of native trees and shrubs.

🦉 Just a short drive from downtown Canandaigua, the Canandaigua Vista Preserve offers an enjoyable one-mile loop trail and wildlife viewing opportunities close to home.

🌅 Visitors can enjoy glimpses of Canandaigua Lake from multiple vista points, each with a handmade bench carved from locally harvested timber.

🌲 We met with students yesterday from Open Doors English in Ithaca for a guided hike in Cascadilla Gorge. FLLT Nature Preserve Manager Jason Gorman gave a presentation on our conservation work and also discussed glacial geology, the natural history of plants and animals, and watersheds in the Finger Lakes region.

🌳 During the Carboniferous period (359-299 million years ago), the area that is now the Finger Lakes was located near the equator and covered with dense tropical swamp forests.

🌲Trees that were as tall as modern ones, but strange and primitive, included seed ferns, giant horsetails, and strange scale trees with leaves growing directly out of their trunks.

🌿 Today, many of the lineages that first evolved in the Carboniferous are still endemic to our region, though much reduced in size. The once-mighty scale trees have shrunk to the Lycopodiaceae, or clubmosses.

🍄 Some fungi from a recent hike at the Steege Hill Preserve in Big Flats, Chemung Co. Steege Hill features seven miles of trails that weave through a predominantly oak-hickory forest, high above the Chemung River.
