Motivational words for everyone!

“Every single one of you is here, because we saw something special in you that meant you belonged at Cornell,” President Michael I. Kotlikoff told the nearly 4,300 first-year and transfer students who, with their families, gathered August 18 at Schoellkopf Field for New Student Convocation.

“So if at some point in the months ahead, when you’re wrestling with a problem set or a paper, and you start to wonder if maybe somebody in Admissions made a mistake – I can tell you right now, they did not,” Kotlikoff said. “You are a Cornellian. And this is where you belong.”

The 3,681 first-year students and 603 transfers who begin moving to campus Aug. 17, hail from 49 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and American Samoa, and 62 countries.

When a well-preserved library book arrived in the mail at the Cornell University Library this year, it came with a remarkable distinction: it had been due back in the 1970s. The volume had accompanied its borrower through decades of life, travel, and reflection before finally making its way home.

The borrower was Hank Webb, MPS '74, a retired U.S. diplomat whose long career took him around the world—but never far from the lessons he first encountered as a Cornell student.

For the Hotelie, the book's return was more than the resolution of a very overdue checkout; it was an opportunity to reflect on the enduring influence of a volume that helped shape his outlook on life.

Says Webb: “Simply stated, the book has been a guiding North Star since first reading it at Cornell in 1973.”

It’s 79 A.D. in the small but affluent Roman city of Pompeii. In the distance, Mount Vesuvius is starting to erupt, and in the streets, life turns upside down: meals left in restaurant kitchens, horses abandoned in harnesses, valuables snatched from homes. Amidst the chaos, does businesswoman Julia Felix make it out alive?

It’s one of the questions driving Pompeii: Out of Time, a three-episode re-creation set to air on National Geographic July 22 at 8 p.m. and stream on Disney+/Hulu starting July 23. Cornell archaeologist Caitie Barrett, an expert on ancient daily life and Pompeii excavation veteran, appears with series host and Marvel Studios “Loki” star Tom Hiddleston on the show as a guide.
“In this series they are following real people,” said Barrett, professor of classics in the College of Arts and Sciences, who has conducted research on the historical Pompeii resident named Julia Felix.

“The show alternates between scenes set in the present day – Tom Hiddleston and me and other folks with relevant expertise walking around Pompeii and other sites – and then scenes that are trying to reimagine the lives of the ancient people in 79 C.E.”

Much condolences to the family of Assoc iate Professor Craig Fennie who passed away this week. At 54, he was much too young.

We are sorry to share the news that Craig Fennie, an associate professor in the School of Applied and Engineering Physics whose groundbreaking research opened new pathways for scientists to discover and design materials, died of a heart attack on June 14, 2026. He was 54.

“Craig’s path was unique. In many ways, he modeled our ‘any person…’ founding creed at Cornell,” said Lynden Archer, the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering. “He was not just known for his creative mind, but for his kindness and humanity – a brilliant, yet grounded member of our campus community. We will miss him tremendously.”

I love this story because reimagining something whose design hasn't really changed in decades takes lots of ingenuity. And it's about time because there are so many advances in fabric tech science, chemistry and material science.

Lauren Weisberger ’99 was 26 when she published The Devil Wears Prada after working at Vogue for a year. Our paths didn't cross but I was at Conde Nast when she was there at Vogue and truly her time there basically wrote itself. It was a time when hotels stays were direct billed to the company and people flew first class because Anna was flying first and they would need to speak to each other on the plane. Part of my role was helping to set and enforce new travel policies. I was also there when the first movie came out. It was a bold move and I'm glad everything worked out for Lauren.

She has now turned her experience into books, two movies, and even a musical. “I had this crazy year I worked at a fashion magazine; it was funny and weird, and I saw a lot of famous people and a lot of excess,” she recalls. “So I just started working on it.”
