Thank you to the Food Food Bank of the Southern Tier for coming out and learning about what we do!

It's almost Hunger Awareness Month and Catholic Charities Tompkins/Tioga is here to help our community with food insecurity (and so much more!)

This summer, members of our Council recently had the opportunity to visit Tioga Fresh Food Rescue and learn more about the work happening to address hunger in Tioga County. 💚

During the visit, the group toured the pantry, learned about Tioga Fresh’s mobile food truck, and participated in an Understanding Hunger activity to take a closer look at the challenges many of our neighbors face when trying to make ends meet.

Experiences like this help connect the dots between the work we do, the partners we work alongside, and the realities of hunger across the Southern Tier.

Thank you to Tioga Fresh for welcoming us and sharing more about the impact you’re making in your community!

We wanted to share a really wonderful story from our YESS program (YESS stands for Youth Empowerment Support Services, a student success program that we run in Tioga county school districts).

Marion, pictured here, was really struggling with her academic performance. She had chronic migraines, and she was missing many of her high school classes. Her grades were
suffering. But our YESS staff recognized her potential. Our YESS coordinator for Spencer Van-Etten, Erica Lilly, met with Marion and came up with a plan to improve her school performance. Over the course of several months, Erica checked in with Marion and supervised her progress. Bit by bit, Marion was able to get her class attendance rate up, and soon, her grades were improving too!

Not only did Marion graduate from high school, but taking advantage of a program at Spencer-Van Etten that allows high school students to receive college credit, she was also able to earn
an Associates Degree from TC3 by the time she walked for her high school graduation. Below is a photo of Marion and Erica at Marion's graduation from TC3. In the fall, Marion will be attending Keuka College as a full-time undergraduate student, where she plans
on majoring in environmental science. We are so
proud of Marion’s success!
