Directed by Andreas Fontana
Argentina 1980. The “dirty war”; the military junta and the disappearances.
Amid this tense atmosphere, a Swiss private banker arrives to replace his partner, who has disappeared overnight. Discretion is everything as he and his wife navigate the high-finance world of Argentina’s ultra-elites, seeking answers when questions can’t be asked.
“Pure evil is all around in this unnervingly subtle, sophisticated movie; an eerie oppression in the air. Andreas Fontana is a Swiss director making his feature debut with this conspiracy drama-thriller, shot with a kind of desiccated blankness, about the occult world of super-wealth and things not to be talked about. The title is a Swiss banker’s code-word in conversation for ‘Be silent’.” (The Guardian)
“With its elegantly restrained cinematography, exquisitely understated performances, and quietly sumptuous production design, Azor embodies the same well-mannered urbanity as its protagonist.” (Slant Magazine)
In French, Spanish & English. Subtitled in English.

A selection of last year's New York Film Festival, Argentine filmmaker Matías Piñeiro's ISABELLA screens Thursday & Sunday at 7pm at Cornell Cinema - https://cinema.cornell.edu/isabella . In it, "Piñeiro continues to explore the porous line between performance and daily ritual in his most visually striking film yet. As in... [his previous work], Piñeiro uses a Shakespeare text to anchor a loose yet intellectually rigorous examination of life’s loves, labors, and futile pursuits, all played out with the minutest of gestures. ISABELLA uses Measure for Measure as inspiration, with regular Piñeiro players María Villar and Agustina Muñoz as Mariel, a teacher with stage aspirations, and Luciana, a more established actress. The filmmaker jumps around in time, from the days leading up to a crucial audition to years later, after the women have moved on to other dreams; meanwhile we keep returning to their collaboration on an entrancing, James Turrell–like light installation. Piñeiro’s art has never been more graceful or structurally complex as in this work of solace amid anxiety and doubt." (Film Society of Lincoln Center)

Argentinian filmmaker Matías Piñeiro visited Cornell Cinema in 2014 with Viola, inspired by Shakespeare’s character. He continues his growing series of las Shakespeareadas, films loosely inspired by Shakespeare’s female heroines, with his latest.
