Wood's Earth Living Classroom

Wood's Earth Living Classroom Engaging youth and community in fresh school food - in the soil, kitchen & classroom - in Ithaca, NY. Project of the Center for Transformative Action 501c3

Wood’s Earth Living Classroom fosters community relationships to cultivate an underdeveloped yet crucial component of the Ithaca area food system—sourcing healthy, local food for our public schools. We believe that youth and community can actively build a more sustainable, cohesive food system by building partnerships to improve school food. We designed our 2.5 acre field for efficient, organic co

mmunity gardening and education, and share it with diverse Ithaca youth who learn to grow crops allocated for their school district’s food programs. Wood’s Earth personnel also help build sourcing and distribution relationships between other local producers and the school district.

Local Youth Farming and School Food Organizations Join Forces!

The Youth Farm Project and Wood's Earth are excited to announce their merger. In June of 2016, the farm-to-school programs and the Fresh Snack Program of Wood's Earth joined the Youth Farm Project. Farm-to-School K-12 curriculum, school food production, and the Youth Farm Project’s intensive teen Summer Program are now centralized on the 10-acre Youth Farm Project site in Danby, NY.

Hello! This is a quick list of the guidelines that we have developed for Fresh Snacks with our partner, the Ithaca City School District Nutrition Program. We would love to hear your thoughts. Email Vanessa, our Fresh Snack Program Manager at [email protected] These snack menu and ingredients guidelines have been created to assist the planning and recipe creation of Fresh Snack as it is created in the ICSD Central Kitchen, to give snack preparation volunteers and work study students a clear idea of what they will be participating in, and to give snack recipients (elementary students and their families) a clear idea of what they can expect to be served.
