A community has a history long before it has an archive. We are building that archive.

For months, Donde Nos Encontramos has been sitting with the people who built Latino life in Tompkins County and have been part of shaping the larger Tompkins community. We’ve sat and have been listening to their stories, following old photographs and forgotten documents, and discovering that every answer seems to uncover another person whose story still needs to be told.

What began as an oral history project has become something larger: an attempt to understand how we found one another, how we built community here, and what we risk losing if nobody bothers to remember.

On October 3, from 3–5 p.m. on the third floor of CSMA, we’re opening that conversation to the community.

Come hear some of what we’ve uncovered. Come tell us what we’ve missed.

If your family came to Tompkins county from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, El Salvador, Bolivia, or really anywhere else bring the story. If you’ve been here five minutes, five years or fifty, bring the memory. If you have an old photograph sitting in a drawer, bring it. If you know the person whose story everyone ought to hear before it’s too late, bring us their name.

You don’t need to be Latino. You don’t need to be a historian. You only need to be curious about the Latino people who helped make this place what it is and influenced others.

Latino food will be provided. The history belongs to all of us.

We inherit roots we never planted.
We grow beneath skies our ancestors never knew.
And still, something in us remembers the way home.

🍎 THE HIDDEN HANDS OF THE HARVEST

In Ithaca this upcoming Apple Harvest weekend, something new is taking root in DeWitt Park.

Esquina Latina is a pilot—our first step toward making visible the Latino stories, labor, food, music, and culture that have long been part of this region, even when they haven’t always been part of the story we tell about it.

Come eat. Come listen. Come celebrate Hispanic heritage month.

And come help us uncover the history hiding in plain sight.

📍 DeWitt Park, Ithaca
📅 September 26 and 27

You aren’t just attending the first Esquina Latina.
You’re helping us build it.
