Our vision statement is our dream for the world we want to live in. in 1948. Our grassroots leadership is dedicated to getting rid of the root causes of poverty and injustice in the larger society and capitalist economy. We have raised standards, held institutions accountable, and built leadership as part of local, statewide and global networks to transform the economic system. The leadership of the Workers’ Center has active and equal participation from all the social groups in our county, including people of all class, racial and ethnic backgrounds, immigrant statuses, genders, sexual orientations, religions, ages, and abilities. The Workers’ Center operates with a deep sense of acceptance and respect, and promotes our personal growth within the organization. We use creative tools and strategies to make our work joyful and fun. We build a sense of connection and community through strong, supportive relationships. We are open and ready to cooperate and join with others in the movement for social and economic justice.

In case you are not already aware, below are some changes in NYS labor rules for 2026:

1. Minimum Wage is now $16/hour, and will increase annually beginning next year in line with the In case you are not already aware, below are some changes in NYS labor rules for 2026:

2. For exempt workers in executive and administrative roles, the minimum weekly salary is now $1,999.10/week ($62,353.20/year). It is important that workers in these roles make sure they are not being misclassified as exempt, when in fact their jobs do not count as executive or administrative under the law (and thus they are illegally being denied overtime pay).

3. NY now prohibits most employers from requesting or using an applicant's or employee's consumer credit history for employment decisions (there are exceptions to this law)

4. The "Trapped at Work" Act bans "employment promissory notes" which require workers to sign agreements forcing them to repay any training costs if they leave the job after a certain period.

5. Unemployment benefits have increased significantly. The benefit cap has risen to $869/week (from $504/week). From here on it will automatically tick upward each year, as it will be indexed to the state's average weekly wage.

Community and Union power packed the house last night creating an unstoppable force leading to a unanimous vote in support of Cayuga United's campaign. The nurses vote next week, but last night shows that Ithaca loves our nurses and that we are a Union Town. Thanks to all who showed up!

ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) — The Tompkins County Legislature voted on a resolution on Tuesday evening to endorse Cayuga Medical Center's Nurses' efforts to unionize. The vote passed unanimously.
