The Paul Schreurs Memorial Program (PSMP) is an initiative of the Ithaca Youth Bureau designed to provide academic, personal, emotional, and social support by promoting relationships and offering programs that inspire underrepresented youth to be successful, confident life-long learners.

Since the early 1990s, our team has worked with youth who have significant barriers to academic success yet show an interest in overcoming these barriers and wish to thrive in their academic lives.

PSMP staff act as liaisons between students' families and school staff, helping families navigate the school system and advocate for their child's education. We facilitate connections through family dinners with school administrators, providing insight into policies and procedures, and offering transportation for school events. Each element of PSMP supports students' long-term academic and social success.

Paul Schreurs Memorial Program isn't just an academic support program. PSMP shows its participants the possibilities of what they’re capable of and that they have things to offer the world. For all students, it creates a safe space and is a community they can count on.

Middle and high school can be especially challenging for students who feel marginalized or lack involvement in extracurricular activities, leaving them without strong connections or motivation to participate in school. Many of our students are youth of color or from low-income backgrounds, with families who support them but may lack the resources or knowledge to navigate the school system effectively. This is where we come in! The Paul Schreurs Memorial Program (PSMP) offers ongoing support and advocacy to help youth succeed academically, address social and emotional needs, and create a sense of belonging.

An essential component of PSMP is providing participants with skill-building and enrichment opportunities with some fun and enjoyment mixed in.😊 On a regular basis, students and staff get together for baking, painting, and other activities to learn new skills and techniques while spending time with their friends.

In 1989, the Paul Schreurs Memorial Program (PSMP) was formed with the mission of providing academic, personal, emotional, and social support to underrepresented youth in the community by promoting relationships and offering programs that inspire them to be successful confident life-long learners.

PSMP was created in memory of Paul J. Schreurs, who passed away in March 1986. Inspired by Eugene Lang, Paul dreamed of sending his “little brother” to college. Paul’s family was aware of his dream and set up the Paul Schreurs Memorial Fund through the Ithaca Youth Bureau.

We're hanging on to the warmer days of summer by remembering all the laughs that we had during our summer academy! 🌻 Whether students were riding bikes from Ithaca Bike Rental, getting artistic in the IYB lobby, or playing fun games in the gym, these everyday activities fostered feelings of belonging and inclusion and strengthened bonds among our participants.
