Workshop: ECHO: generative creative writing

Buffalo Street Books - Registration Required

This generative workshop led by nicole v. basta (current Tompkins County Poet Laureate) will invite students to engage with other texts as a starting point, a place to echo outward from into their own work. Multi-step prompts and questions derived from the texts will guide us. This class is for any writer, creator, thinker, dreamer, human looking for insight into their creativity that doesn’t come from straightforward thinking. We will read from ancient and modern work, poetry and prose. Participants will be encouraged to keep their pen moving and will be invited into intentional space that allows for creative, generative, radical play on the page in a low stakes, supportive way. Please bring your own pen and a notebook/ or at least 5 pieces of paper. Computers/Tablets welcome for folks needing them as assistive devices.

🍂 Solace Among Trees

“Solace Among Trees” exhibits our deep, reciprocal connection to trees, with a sense of the resilience and sanctuary trees offer. Viewers will be immersed in trees created in compelling styles. Mara Alper’s photo collages and assemblages are inspired by rhythmic patterns of fallen wood, leaves, and vines shaped by water and light. Karen Viola’s mixed media and artist books offer distinctive portraits of trees she considers kin. Tree art work created by young students from the Greater Ithaca Activities Center and Southside Community Center after school programs and South Hill Elementary School will also be on view. Reading: Juneteenth: The Black Fantastic

A reading of speculative poetry by African American poets on the theme of Juneteenth. Juneteenth celebrates the years late arrival of the announcement of emancipation to the enslaved in Texas. The celebration has come to signify a celebration of freedom and liberty for all those previously enslaved. The poets include multi-award winning Linda Addison, Owolabe Aboyade, Sol’Sax, upfromsumdirt, and Grandmaster of Fantastic Poetry, Akua Lezli Hope.
