Next up on the Art Trail Open Studio weekend spotlight is: Jen Meyers of Perfect Mug Pottery!

“I am a small batch artisan potter, living and working in Trumansburg, NY. Also an artist, novelist, and coloring book creator, I am a compulsive creator who loves to learn. I’ve loved pottery my entire life, but only learned how to make my own when, out of the blue, my husband gifted me a pottery class in 2018, knowing I’d always wanted to learn. It was the most romantic gift of my life. On the card, he wrote, “You love to create and I love you…that’s why.” I fell in love on day one of class (of COURSE I did), and that started me on this particular creative path.

The natural warmth and beauty of black and brown clays inspired me to develop my signature style of hand-carved designs with the surrounding clay left bare—the clays are simply too beautiful to keep fully hidden beneath glaze. My style is time-consuming and challenging to glaze, but I love the results too much to do it any other way.”

Next up on the Art Trail Open Studio weekend spotlight is: Arthur Bucknor!

“My current paintings reflect my life-long exploration of the influence of my father, but more than that they tell the story of a profound and traumatic reinvention of my own artistic practice. After being born in Ithaca (while my father was a PhD student at Cornell) I moved with my family to Ghana when I was 5 years old, where I grew up in a creative home surrounded by my father’s art and exploring my own creativity as a painter and DJ. I returned to Ithaca for high school at the age of 18, and then traveled back to Ghana as an adult. In 2010, a traumatic brain tumor left me without the use of my dominant (left) hand, and needing to use a wheelchair for mobility.

The unexpected loss of control forced me to relearn the basic mechanisms of painting as well as living. Despite initial struggles, my journey of reinvention became transformative. Inspired by my late father’s artistic legacy, I embraced the connection with my roots, allowing my artwork to flow through me. My right hand, initially weakened by the trauma, emerged as a newly-freed vessel of expression, infusing newfound fluidity and emotion into my paintings.”

“When I met my first gourd, I didn’t know much. I knew about mothers and babies, because I was a midwife. But I didn’t know much about gourds. I didn’t know that they were among the first domesticated plants, or that they have been used throughout history as musical instruments, personal flotation devices, religious icons, and kitchen utensils. There was a time when every good cook had her favorite gourd. I didn’t know that, and I didn’t know I would be spending the next 20 years (and counting) washing, staining, carving, and illuminating gourds. There was so much I didn’t know.”

“I was raised on a farm in Ohio and spent most of my adult life in Southern California building mansions on the beach and creating art.

I started in wood as a master carpenter and expanded to any other material I could get my hands on. I do indoor and outdoor sculptures in wood, bronze, metal, paper and stone, furniture, paintings, crafts (I taught 19th century woodworking at Shaker Village in Kentucky for a time), longbows, knifes, bowls, etc.”
