CTB and IB Workers

Did everybody hear about the huge victory won by the tireless efforts of striking workers at Hunts Point Produce Market? After having risked their health and safety for nearly a year, with hundreds infected and even six dead from COVID, they decided enough was enough, and organized a strike. Their demands? A $1 raise for all workers.

This is an enormous victory for labor rights, and a testament not only to the power of unions, but of direct action as well. We stand in solidarity with them, now and always.

Hello community members, fellow employees, and everybody else who’s been keeping an eye on our movement!

First and foremost, thank you to everybody who put their support behind us. We would not have made the strides we’ve made so far without your tremendous turnout, and we hope to keep the momentum up for future endeavors. And a special thanks to the BLM protesters who helped get things moving far quicker through the power of direct action.

Second of all, our next steps! Having had our COVID demands either met or modified, we are now turning our organizing attention to the well-documented racism perpetuated by the ownership of CTB/IB. We will specifically be working to demand economic justice for BIPOC who have been the frequent targets of wage theft in multiple forms.

Third of all, as of right now, all CTB Downtown & Collegetown employees are unemployed. The Collegetown location has received confirmation that they will be reopening on January 12, while Downtown is waiting until the 21st. We are anticipating and hoping to receive our jobs back, but we will be updating this space as to whether or not that proves true.

Thank you all again for your continued support, and we look forward to continuing our efforts in 2021.

It’s disappointing that the owners of IB/CTB are waving away our concerns and asserting that they’re doing a great job. Workers have labored in fear and brought up concerns since the beginning of the pandemic — but many who acted alone have been retaliated against or laid off. Our demands are clear and reasonable, and instead of meeting them, the owners offer us assurance they’re great. This response is out of touch.

An online petition launched earlier this week by a group identified as "CTB/IB Workers" seeks "customer solidarity" and support for a set of concerns expressed by employees at Collegetown Bagels and Ithaca Bakery. The sister businesses represent one of the largest private employers in Ithaca.

Dear Ithaca,

Out of concern for ourselves, our management, our valued CTB and IB customer community, and the Ithaca community as a whole, we find it necessary to present these demands in the hopes that those who work for CTB and IB, those who love it, and everyone in between can have a happy and healthy winter. It’s become clear that our government is unwilling or unable to properly ensure the safety of individuals and businesses at this stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this is reflected by the all-time high active cases and infection rates, both in Ithaca and the rest of the United States.

Multiple employees have individually expressed these concerns to CTB/IB ownership, but this has not been enough to achieve the COVID-19 protections we and our customers deserve. In light of this, CTB/IB Workers for COVID-19 Safety are standing united together in our five collective demands for the closure of indoor dining until a vaccine is widely available, more specific sanitation and safety enforcement roles, more physical barriers to separate workers and customers, hazard pay for working in the most dangerous period yet, and the strict adherence to our worker-designed protocol for responding to COVID-19 exposures and infections. We hope that as a customer community, you will stand with us in demanding the protections we need — just six feet away, please :)
