Happy World Wetland Day!

Wetlands are one of the most beneficial, biodiverse, and beautiful ecosystems on Earth. They help reduce flooding, purify water, produce food, and are home to a wide variety of plant and animal life.

At the same time, wetlands are one of the most imperiled ecosystems. Each year, more than 80,000 acres of wetland habitat are lost to draining and filling for human development, pollution, or other overexploitation of their resources.

Please join The Wetland Trust in celebrating these vital ecosystems, and help us raise awareness and appreciation not just today but every day!

Despite the wet summer causing high nest failure at TWT’s bog turtle preserve, our monitoring has shown that juvenile survival rates are high! This hatchling has a good chance of making it to adulthood, and every bog turtle we save is one more step towards returning this Critically Endangered species to a sustainable population. 🐢

Last week was full of excitement as we released 33 Blanding’s turtle headstarts! These juveniles have had a year to grow big and strong, free of threats that would otherwise decimate their numbers. These headstarts have a much higher chance of making it to maturity! We want to offer a HUGE thank you to our Board member, Maribel Pregnall, who is the powerhouse behind this project, as well as Lindsay Charlop, Giovanni Fiorisi, Dr. Zachary Whitman, and the rest of the team working to save these incredible creatures!

There's a new 'Bender on the Block!

Today was the first TWT Hellbender survey of 2023, where we recapture and record juveniles we have released along the Upper Susquehanna River watershed over the past several years. Today we unexpectedly found a new wild adult! This lovely lady was cozied up in one of our artificially crafted 'hellbender huts' --which have proved to be quite popular.
