🌍 Happy Earth Day! Today as we celebrate, let us be reminded of the many connections between agriculture and the health of our planet. At the forefront is land stewardship, preserving biodiversity, and nurturing our many farm ecosystems.

Today, we would also like to honor the many contributions of BIPOC farmers whose traditional farming practices, wisdom, and innovative approaches offer invaluable solutions and lessons in harmonizing with land and nature. Let us join together and continue to cultivate a future where every seed sown in solidarity is a promise of a healthier, more equitable world.

Established in 1937 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a New Deal project, the Flint River Farms Resettlement Project gave African Americans the opportunity to purchase farmland and develop their farm-management skills at a time when most Black farmers were sharecroppers. Descendants of these farmers strive to ensure the New Deal resettlement project is not forgotten. Read more here:

The Flint River Farms Resettlement Project was an important part of Black history that the cofounders of the Flint River Farms Preservation Society are eager to keep alive.

"Since the height of Black farming in the 1920s, the number of African-Americans going into agricultural careers has dwindled. For Black owner-operators in urban areas, the presence is low but appears to be making a comeback. Three young women in the Philadelphia metro area are leading the charge."

You can read the local news story about them here:

Three young women in Philadelphia are leading the charge in bringing Black farming back to urban areas, connecting with ancestors' agricultural roots.

It's Black History Month, and throughout February Potlikker Capital will celebrate past and current black farmers making positive impacts on the food system and their local communities.

Our first black farmer spotlight is on Benjamin Banneker, an astronomer, farmer, and scientist. He published many almanacs during his life, which farmers used in order to know when to plant crops and when to expect good and bad weather.
