Vaccines have made many serious diseases so rare that most parents have never seen them firsthand. But doctors across the country are reporting a troubling trend: more children are being hospitalized with illnesses that vaccines can help prevent.

When vaccination rates decline, preventable diseases can make a comeback. Vaccines remain one of the most important tools we have to protect children, families, and communities. Read the full New York Times piece: https://nyti.ms/3S8ch9k

The first years of life are a critical time for a child's growth and development. And since 2025, at least 500 babies have spent some portion of those critical moments in ICE custody.

New reporting by The Marshall Project highlights the experiences of those young children in immigration detention and how inadequate conditions and separation from family members can impact their long-term health and development.

Dr. Marsha Griffin, executive committee member of the AAP Council on Immigrant Child and Family Health, spoke to the outlet, noting this period of infancy and toddlerhood is “probably the most harmful time of their lives to have them in detention.”

Maternal vaccines help protect babies from day one.

When expecting mothers receive recommended vaccines during pregnancy, critical antibodies are passed to their baby, helping newborns build resistance to serious illnesses before they’re old enough to be vaccinated themselves. This early protection can help reduce the risk of severe diseases and hospitalization during a baby's most vulnerable first months of life.

Water safety is important for all ages, but especially for toddlers. Children aged 1 – 4 are more likely to drown than any other age group, and it can happen in a moment.

The AAP recommends using multiple "layers" of water safety protection, since no single method can prevent all drowning. These layers work together and include barriers, supervision, water safety skills, life jackets, and being ready to respond with rescue and CPR. Parents can talk with their pediatrician if they have any questions about water safety this summer. https://bit.ly/3zcwocX

When children are separated from the people who care for them, the consequences can last a lifetime.

In a letter to the editor published by The New York Times, Dr. Anik Patel, Dr. Julia Rosenberg and Dr. Sural Shah, executive committee members of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Immigrant Child and Family Health, call attention to the number of children that have been separated from their families due to immigration enforcement and the lasting harm family separation can have on children’s physical and mental health.

The pediatricians argue that policies impacting children must prioritize their safety and well-being. Family separation is not just an immigration issue – it’s a child health issue.
