Our F.I.S.H. Tour Coordinator, Hannah, takes us through the journey salmon take on the final leg of their journey home to the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery. Along the way we’ll be highlighting some great spots to see the salmon. The first stop is the Ballard Locks.

The FISH Salmon on Sunset Celebration is three weeks away! We will have trout feeding, rubber duck racing, fishbowl mocktails, arts creation station, scavenger hunts, spawning shed painting, live music, beer garden, fly casting lessons, salmon jumping in the creek. The FISH (Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery) team visited the Sammamish River in the City of Redmond to watch the Chinook salmon migrating. They will end up at the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife Issaquah fish hatchery in a couple of weeks! So exciting.

In Issaquah Creek, the returning salmon stop at the hatchery’s weir which acts like a movable dam. It redirects the salmon into the fish ladder leading into the hatchery. The weir is raised at the beginning of spawning season using inflatable bladders beneath its flaps. As salmon swim upstream, they are redirected through the fish ladder gates that lead to the hatchery’s holding ponds. Salmon are collected for spawning, where their eggs and s***m, called milt, are collected. Salmon are also passed upstream to the upper part of the creek. During spawning season, visitors come to watch the salmon jump into the weir. The weir’s design allows salmon to jump and fall safely back into the creek. When spawning season is over, the weir is lowered by deflating the bladders below the flaps.
