As we settle into the school year, some families may be considering special education evaluations for their students. Recent changes to Washington State law have updated some important timelines in that process. Effective June 11, 2026, ESHB 2557 updated special education evaluation timelines, giving families more time to review evaluation results before eligibility meetings.

Key changes include:

•20 school days for referral decisions (previously 25)

•40 school days for eligibility meetings (previously 35)

•Evaluation reports must be provided at least 5 school days before eligibility meetings

We’ve updated our “Road to an IEP” graphic to reflect these changes and help families better understand the evaluation process. Feel free to save and share this information with those who might find it helpful! You may also visit the ISD Special Services website for more detailed information on timelines.
