We would like to thank Captain John Badger of Barbarian Sportfishing for joining us on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Capt. Badger did a very informative seminar for us by first telling us how he started in the fishing business, by originally starting as a commercial fisherman, followed by getting his Captain’s license and starting his current charter business. Capt. Badger then explained to us his live bait halibut/striper fishing techniques, followed by demonstrating his salmon trolling method. He then showed us all the rods/reels and tackle that he uses for halibut, stripers, and salmon. We would like to thank Capt. John Badger for joining us and sharing his knowledge with all that were in attendance that evening.

As I sit at my keyboard and type my President’s message, I’m proud to say that the “5th Annual Barry Canevaro Memorial Striper Derby” was a huge success. The striper bite and weather cooperated, plus the food served by “Taqueria Mr. Delicioso” to all the anglers that fished the derby was fantastic. As in previous years we partnered with “Rec4Vets,” so during the day of the derby we held a silent auction and raffle next to the weigh station to benefit this organization. First, I’d like to thank everyone who supported the derby, silent auction and raffle. At our meeting night on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 we presented “Rec4Vets” moderator D’arren Butler a check for $3,347.16 that amounted to 100% of the proceeds from the silent auction and raffle.
I would be remiss if I didn’t thank our regular and commercial members that graciously donated to the silent auction and raffle, making it an astounding success. They are, in no particular order, Kyle Wise of HeadHunter Sportfishing, Mike Funtanilla of Bend Ur Rod Sportfishing, Dennis Grossi of Grossi’s Guide Service, Rickey Acosta of Feeding Frenzy Sportfishing, Johnathan Russo of Amethyst Fishing Charters, Ben Mechling of Reel Addiction 1, Shawn Taylor of Reel Addiction 2, Addicted Fishing, Bait & Booze Tackle Shop in Galt, Ghost Bait & Tackle in Sacramento, Bodega Tackle in Petaluma, Buck’s Outboard Repair in Sacramento, Crustacean Sensation, Get Out and Fish, Golden State Salmon Association, NorCal Guides & Sportsmen’s Association, North Pole Bait & Tackle in Rio Vista, Charlie Clark, Fin & Fish Printing, Kevin Eck, Ron Retzlaff, Costa Sunglasses, Kevin Brock of FishKevinBrock, The Tackle Box in Chico, Marina Bait & Tackle in Suisun City, Freeport Market/Reggie’s Tackle Shack in Sacramento, Blade Runner, Snagum Bagun in Rio Vista, Dangle Custom Soft Plastics, and Bass Mafia Outdoors. Without all this support our fundraiser for “Rec4Vets’ would not have been possible. Thank you!
And now the winners of the derby. They are: 1st Place-Dominick Mohamede, 2nd Place-Cameron Veach, 3rd Place-Jose Palacios, 4th Place-Ryan Fithian, and 5th Place-Don Longanecker. A BIG congratulations to them all!
Next, I would like to thank all those that volunteered. They are: Kathy Baccetti, D’arren Butler, Diana Canevaro, Don Longanecker, Mike Pine, and George Wight. And last, but certainly not least, our Vice-President Mike Phillips and Board Member Denise Boos who deserve all the credit for co-chairing this very successful event. Without them this event would not have been possible. THANK YOU ALL!
Now onto some news I wished I didn’t have to announce. Unfortunately, due to administrative and insurance issues we will again have to cancel our “Free Fishing Camp for Kids” that was scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026. But don’t despair, we will be assisting with the organization “Bay Area Fishing” on Saturday, August 22rd for their “Kid’s Fishing Camp.” More information on that event as the date draws near. We are confident that next year we will be able to host our own “Free Fishing Camp for Kids.”
Moving right along at our April 8, 2026 meeting I, President Baccetti, announced our fishing contest winner for April 2026. The winner was Mike Phillips. Congratulations Mike! Remember, all Isleton Delta Chapter members in good standing are eligible to enter one monthly photo for our fishing photo contest. So, if you’re a member in good standing of our chapter, text your fishing success photo with your name included to President Ken Baccetti at 415-602-1298. All photos received will be included in our monthly newsletters, on the Isleton link of the CSBA website, and on our Instagram page. The next Grand Prize will be chosen on June 10, 2026, so text me your fishing success photos to possibly be next year’s Grand Prize winner.
Now onto membership. Membership Director Kathy Baccetti tells me we have signed on 1 new commercial member and 8 new regular members at our derby and April meeting. Our new commercial member is Captain Joe PouPore of Patriot Joe’s Guide Service. Our new regular members are Jonathan Storer, Bob and Bridget Demers, Jose Palacios, Ryan Fithian, Fernando Vasquez, Daniel Swidrak, and Rand George. Welcome to the Isleton Chapter! The easiest way to renew your membership, or to join us as a new member, is to come to one of our monthly meetings. If you’re unable to attend one of our meetings, you can simply go to the Isleton link of the website (www.striper-csba.org) as we do take credit cards online. If you’d prefer to renew/join via the US Mail, you can print our Isleton Chapter application off the membership link of the website, fill it out, and mail your check or credit card information to the Isleton address listed. All new members receive an Isleton Chapter hat, 2 Isleton Chapter decals, and other Isleton Chapter swag. In closing, I look forward to seeing you at our next dinner, meeting and seminar on Wednesday, May 13th.

We are pleased to announce that at our meeting on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, we presented a check to D’arren Butler of Recreation 4 Veterans in the amount of $3,347.16. This amount represents 100% of the proceeds that were raised at our silent auction and raffle at the “5th Annual Barry Canevaro Memorial Striped Bass Derby” that took place on Saturday, April 4, 2026. We would like to thank all the regular and commercial members of our chapter that generously donated to make our silent auction and raffle possible. We would like to thank Vance Staplin, Executive Director of Golden State Salmon Association, for joining us on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Vance did a very informative seminar for us by first showing us his recipe for brining frozen anchovies. Vance had a handout of his brining recipe that he gave to everyone that was in attendance. Vance then showed us a “break-away” attachment to a flasher that he uses while salmon fishing. He then demonstrated it and passed the flashers around to the audience so they were able to see how it worked. We would like to thank Vance Staplin for joining us and sharing his salmon fishing knowledge with all that were in attendance that evening.

As I sit and type the President’s message, I would like to bring your attention to an error I made in last months President’s message. When thanking those that helped make our crab feed and fundraiser a success, I inadvertently didn’t thank our Board Member Denise Boos. Denise was a BIG help the days before the dinner, as well as the day and evening of the dinner. She is always available to help at all our events, and she is also the co-chair of our derby on April 4th. Denise is an integral part of our organization, and I just wanted to publicly apologize to her, as well as thank her for all her efforts helping us in the past and future.
Now onto fishing. As you may already know, on Saturday, April 4, 2026 we will be hosting the “5th Annual Barry Canevaro Memorial Striper Derby” out of the Rio Vista Boat Launch. As in past years we will be partnering with “Rec4Vets.” During the day of the derby, we will be holding a silent auction and raffle next to the weigh station to benefit this great organization. Our silent auction currently has 7 fishing trips, from fresh to salt water, that were generously donated by some of our commercial members. The raffle has fishing rods, reels, and quite a bit of fishing gear also donated by some of our commercial members. I will list and thank all the doners in next month’s newsletter, as donations are still coming in. 100% of the proceeds from the silent auction and raffle will be donated to Rec4Vets at our April 8th meeting. In addition, all those anglers that enter to fish the derby will receive a complimentary lunch provided by “Taqueria Mr. Delicioso.” A flier announcing the derby including its format is attached to this newsletter. It can also be found on our Facebook and Instagram pages and on many other local and fishing related pages. You can enter the derby NOW. To enter go to the website (www.Striper-CSBA.org).
Moving right along at our March 11, 2026 meeting I, President Baccetti, announced our fishing contest winner for March 2026. The winner was Don Paganelli. Congratulations Don!
Now a message from California Striped Bass Association (CSBA) State Board President Jim Cox and the CSBA State Board of Directors: CSBA supports catch and release of striped bass, particularly striped bass measuring over 30”. The CSBA State Board encourages all striped bass fisherman and CSBA members to practice catch and release. This is necessary to protect the future of striped bass.
Now for a membership report. Membership Director Kathy Baccetti tells me that all members should have received their renewal notices in the mail by early January. If you already renewed, we “Thank You!” but if you haven’t renewed just yet, please renew either by mail or on the website listed below for your convenience. Kathy tells me that there are still a few members that haven’t sent in their 2026 dues.
Kathy further told me that since last month we have signed on 8 new regular members. Our new regular members are Topper DeLaRosa, Tony Pitts, Ramon Cruz, Mark Perez, Mike Allison, Matt Sinclair, Steve Kotani and Scott Hammond. Welcome aboard! If you’re reading this and would like to become a member, please don’t hesitate to join! Your membership strengthens our mission to protect striped bass and other precious fisheries. The easiest way to renew your membership, or to join us as a new member, is to come to one of our monthly meetings. If you’re unable to attend one of our meetings, you can simply go to the Isleton link of the website (www.striper-csba.org) as we do take credit cards online. All new members receive an Isleton Chapter hat and 2 Isleton Chapter decals, and previous members that renew receive an Isleton Chapter decal, all as a thank you for being a member.
In closing, I hope to see you at the derby on April 4th and at our next meeting on Wednesday, April 8TH at our dinner, meeting and seminar. Aside from our regular program that evening, we will be making a check presentation that evening to “Rec4Vets”. The check will be 100% of the proceeds from the derby’s silent auction and raffle.

We would like to thank Captain Jay Lopes of Right Hook Sportfishing for joining us on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Captain Lopes did a very informative seminar for us on trolling and live bait drifting for halibut and stripers in San Francisco Bay. Captain Lopes first explained to us the different tides that are effective, then he showed us his trolling rig and live bait leader setup. He then explained what type of rods and reels and P-Line he uses when trolling and live bait drifting in San Francisco Bay. He lastly showed us the various locations that he targets halibut and stripers in San Francisco and San Pablo Bays as well as out the Golden Gate. We would like to thank Captain Jay Lopes for joining us and sharing his knowledge with those that were in attendance that evening.
