There’s a lot of information circulating about nominal compensation legislation. Here’s what volunteer firefighters need to know: the bill advancing today is not the original bill.

The original proposal was withdrawn after legislative leadership determined it would not pass as written. It was replaced with a stronger version that is now sponsored in both houses of the New York State Legislature.

The current bill includes provisions the original did not, including a $15 million state assistance fund, New York state income tax protections, and expanded compensation options for volunteer firefighters.

FASNY’s response lays out the facts, the history, and what’s actually moving forward.

🔥 Grill safely, Suffolk County! 🔥

As we enjoy this Labor Day weekend, Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services wants to remind you that grilling can pose serious fire and safety risks. Keep these simple tips in mind:

✅ Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from structures
✅ Check your propane tank for cracks or damage
✅ Keep children and pets at a safe distance
✅ Never use starter fluid on an open flame
✅ Avoid loose-fitting clothing while grilling

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, thousands of home fires involve grills each year. A few simple precautions can help keep your family, home, and community safe.

Grill smart. Grill safe. Stay Suffolk safe. 🧯🔥

The New York State Legislature has passed a bill that would quadruple the tax credit for volunteer firefighters across the state.

This legislation supports 80,000 volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to protecting their communities.

Now we need your help. The bill is currently awaiting action by the Governor – let’s encourage her to sign it into law promptly.

Act today through FASNY’s VoterVoice and contact the Governor.
