A Brief History of the Ranch Opener
When the Harriman family gifted the Railroad Ranch to the State of Idaho, they gave more than land and wildlife habitat. They shared a vision rooted in respect. At the heart of that vision was a simple but meaningful rule: each year, certain Ranch trails and the world-renowned Ranch section of the Henry’s Fork would remain closed until June 15.

This was stewardship in action: time intentionally set aside for waterfowl and other wildlife to nest, raise their young, and thrive without disturbance. From the beginning, the Ranch was meant to be more than a destination; it was a place to care for.

As June 15 approaches, anticipation builds. Anglers prepare for their return to the Henry’s Fork, honoring a ritual that stretches back decades. In the early years, the June 14 Ranch opener was informal, with friends gathering at local homes, gravel pit camps, the A-Bar, and what is now the Bing Lempke Log Jam parking lot. They share stories, upheld traditions, and waited for the first light of June 15.

Everything changed in 1999. That year, TroutHunter, being newly opened and eager to serve the fishing community, turned a loose tradition into a true celebration. What had once been scattered gatherings found both a home and a host. With a few grills, a couple of kegs, and a shared sense of purpose, TroutHunter created the first organized Ranch Opener and brought anglers and the community together.

The simple step of adding structure, intention, and a welcoming place to gather sparked a tradition that has endured for nearly three decades. In 2023, united by a shared commitment to conservation, education, and stewardship of Harriman State Park and the greater Henry’s Fork watershed, Friends of Harriman State Park first partnered with TroutHunter to co-host the evening event.

Friends of Harriman works to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural beauty, historic character, and recreational opportunities of Harriman State Park for future generations. Through fundraising, advocacy, education, and support for park improvements, the organization helps ensure the Ranch remains a place where wildlife, conservation, and recreation coexist in balance.

Throughout its history, one thing has remained constant: the Ranch Opener brings people together to honor the Harriman family’s founding vision. It shows that access and conservation can go hand in hand, and that patience matters—not only in pursuing a Ranch rainbow, but also in protecting what we value most.

We look forward to celebrating with you at this year’s TroutHunter and Friends of Harriman Ranch Opener—an event that reflects the spirit of the Ranch, the strength of its community, and the tradition TroutHunter helped bring to life. Join us at TroutHunter on June 14 as we come together to celebrate.

Dear Friends of Harriman State Park Donors and Supporters,

As you know, despite strong public opposition, Senate Bill 1300 passed the Idaho Legislature and was signed into law by Governor Brad Little, creating new uncertainty about the future of Harriman State Park.

Idaho’s longstanding reputation for honesty and integrity, which helped secure the Harriman family’s extraordinary 11,000-acre gift to the people of Idaho, is now called into question. The director of the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation will now serve “at the pleasure of the Governor” instead of the politically neutral Park and Recreation Board, thereby introducing politics into the park’s management. This is a violation of the original Harriman Gift Agreement and remains contrary to the wishes of the Harriman family.

In this hard-fought legislative effort, your support made a meaningful difference. Friends of Harriman State Park (FHSP) developed and executed a comprehensive advocacy strategy to inform and engage the public, mobilize stakeholders, and communicate directly with legislators. Because of your letters, emails, and phone calls, many elected officials from both sides of the aisle stood together in opposition to the bill.

We extend our sincere gratitude to each of you who made your voice heard. Your engagement demonstrated a shared commitment to protecting the park from political influence. We offer special thanks to Harriman family members Tom Dixon and Averell Harriman Fisk. In particular, Tom Dixon’s determination and dedication to preserving his family’s legacy inspired and strengthened our efforts. FHSP board members were proud to stand alongside him in providing testimony before both House and Senate State Affairs Committees.

We also gratefully acknowledge the efforts of our conservation partners and allied organizations, including the Henry’s Fork Foundation, Henry’s Fork Wildlife Alliance, Conservation Voters of Idaho, Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association, Trout Unlimited, and the Idaho Wildlife Federation, who strongly opposed the bill on behalf of their members and the broader public.

Our appreciation also goes to Idaho legislators of both parties who demonstrated leadership and courage by speaking out and voting against the bill. Special thanks go to all those who fought the bill in their respective State Affairs committees and during the floor debate. We particularly want to thank those who represent Fremont County – Senator Burtenshaw and Representatives Furniss and Raymond – for defending the Harriman legacy throughout the battle.

While this outcome is disappointing, there is a clear and enduring silver lining: the shared commitment to this remarkable place remains strong. Our collective respect and reverence for wild landscapes, public lands, and responsible stewardship continues to unite us. As we move forward, FHSP’s commitment to protecting Harriman State Park’s natural and cultural resources and the quality of the visitor experience remains steadfast.

Looking ahead, we are excited to advance several important initiatives. Our Trails Management Plan, developed over the past two years with the support of FHSP and expert consultants, will be released in early summer. This collaborative effort has brought together trail users, stakeholders, and agency partners, including Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, Idaho Fish and Game, and the U.S. Forest Service, to help guide future trail use while safeguarding sensitive habitats and wildlife.

We also look forward to gathering with you at upcoming events, including the Ranch Opener on June 14, celebrating opening of all Harriman trails, and our annual Wine in the Woods fundraiser on September 12.

Thank you for your continued support, your advocacy, and your deep commitment to Harriman State Park. Together, we will continue working to protect and honor this extraordinary place for generations to come.

On behalf of the Friends of Harriman Board of Directors,

Charlie Lansche
Board Chair, Friends of Harriman State Park

Despite strong and vocal opposition, SB1300 today passed the House by a 41–29 vote and is expected to be signed into law by Idaho Governor Brad Little.

We are deeply grateful to each one of you who took action — and to the legislators who stood firmly in opposition during today's House vote, including Rep. Rod Furniss, Rep. Jerald Raymond, Rep. Stephanie Jo Mickelson, Rep. Ben Fuhriman, Rep. Britt Raybould, and Rep. Michael Veile.

While this is a difficult moment, our commitment to protecting Harriman remains unwavering. We are deeply grateful to our friends, donors, and partners who have stood together throughout this effort. See more from us, below:

While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we want to pause first and foremost to express our deepest gratitude. Over the past two weeks, you showed up in extraordinary ways—for Harriman State Park and for the values it represents.
