It's never easy to say goodbye to our interns. πŸ₯Ί Today marks the last day for our current lead intern, Lauren. Throughout her time at I.CARE, Lauren's positive attitude and love for the ocean made her such an essential part of the I.CARE team. Her passion and empathy towards everyone truly does not go unnoticed! We are excited that Lauren will be staying on for the next couple of months to work as a Field Research Scientist. We want to wish Lauren the best of luck in her next adventure and are excited to continue seeing more of her smiling face in the next few months! πŸ’™

Check out this beautiful mountainous star coral (Orbicella faveolata) at one of I.CARE's restoration sites, Rocky Top reef. 😍

The mountainous star coral provides much of the structure and complexity we see on our reefs. Oftentimes, you will find many different organisms hanging in or around these fantastic boulders. 🐠

Next time you're out on the reef, keep you eyes out for these towering beauties! πŸͺΈ

It’s time for another Reef Resident! Today, we are highlighting the mesmerizing Sexy Dancer Shrimp, Thor dicaprio. Despite their tiny size, these shrimps are hard to miss thanks to their striking patterns and unique β€œdancing” behavior thought to be used for communication and social interactions. πŸ’ƒπŸ¦

Commonly found throughout reef worldwide, it was only recently discovered that the sexy dancer shrimp living in the Caribbean and those in the Indo-Pacific are actually two different species! Thor amboinensis is the Indo-pacific counterpart to Thor dicaprio, living in the Caribbean.

Next time you are exploring the reef make sure to keep an eye out for these tiny dancers tucked among the anemones. ✨

Stay tuned for more reef residents to come!

Let’s uncover the hidden secrets of our reef sponges! 🧽 Sponges are far more than simple organisms within the reef, they are living habitats that support entire underwater communities. Many marine organisms, including fish, crustaceans, shrimp, and brittle stars, use sponges as shelter from predators and strong ocean currents. Their intricate structures create safe spaces to hide, feed, and even reproduce, turning these quiet reef organisms into thriving hidden ecosystems. 🌊✨

Did you know I.CARE has monthly sponge restoration trips you can join us on. Every second Thursday, I.CARE partners with to allow you to try your hand at sponge restoration. Join us by calling Key Dives!

05/22/2026

Summer is heating up which means more sponge outplanting!

Sponges are more adaptable to intense temperature changes and provide a ton of different benefits to coral reef ecosystems.

Learn how we outplant sponges join us on a sponge outplanting every 2nd Thursday of the month with Key Dives!
