Safe Families for Children - Westmoreland County Chapter

Safe Families for Children - Westmoreland County Chapter Safe Families for Children is a nonprofit, volunteer movement that gives hope and support to families facing crises.

Our goal is to help keep children safe and out of the foster care system. Safe Families for Children ministers God’s Love to families in need. Safe Families for Children offers volunteers an opportunity to transform their communities by reaching out to care for children whose parents are facing challenges. Right from their own homes, families participate in ministry by offering hospitality, hope,

and the love of Christ to families in a crisis that could temporarily jeopardize the parents’ ability to provide safety and stability for their children. As a Safe Family, volunteers host children for a short period of time, allowing the child's parent(s) to focus on resolving the issues that led to the crisis. The average length of a child's stay in a Safe Family home is about 45 days but is assessed on a case-by-case basis and can vary in length, depending on the needs of child and each family. After being screened and trained by Bethany staff, volunteers join a support network offering families temporary respite care for their children during the earliest signs of a crisis. Safe Families, who are primarily from area churches, open their homes and provide a child with a safe, nurturing place to live while his or her parents work to bring stability back to their family. Because placement with a Safe Family is voluntary, parents never have to worry about losing custody of their children while they work out their problems, and they may request that their children return at any time. Safe Families is not foster care or adoption—the goal of the program is the reunification of children with their biological parent(s) in a home that is more stable and healthy. Mothers and fathers going through a temporary crisis can request a volunteer Safe Family to host their children (from newborns through age 17) while they work to resolve the issues that led to the situation. Most children placed with a Safe Family are 6 years old or younger. Whenever possible, children stay with a family in the same community and remain in contact with their biological parents through phone calls and visits. In addition to screening and training volunteers, Bethany also offers ongoing support to volunteers as they care for children. Bethany also works with the biological parents during the placement to help them identify steps to regain stability and be reunited with their child quickly and safely.

Community matters! Because no one should have to face life's challenges alone!🩵💚💙

Community is vital for families because it provides connection, support, and belonging- the foundation every family needs to thrive. When families are surrounded by a strong community, they have people to lean on during tough times or lend a helping hand. This support reduces stress, prevents isolation, and strengthens a family's overall well-being.

Behind every number we report is a family whose life has been touched by Safe Families for Children.

Valerie’s story is a powerful example of how Circles of Support lead to long-term stability, dignity, and connectedness.

Every month, Safe Families for Children serves hundreds of low-income families — most led by single parents doing everything they can to keep their children safe and their families together.

Child poverty has tripled to 13% since the pandemic, and many families may soon lose access to essential SNAP (food assistance) benefits. These circumstances will leave parents wondering how they will feed their children or keep a roof over their heads. In the coming days, some parents will face impossible choices: pay rent or buy groceries. No family should ever have to choose between stability and hunger.

This is where Safe Families comes in! We walk alongside families, providing both resources and relationships that create a Circle of Support to help parents get back on their feet. We want every family to have a support network to count on!

Are you isolated and going through a hard time? You’re not alone. Safe Families for Children is here to help.

A child’s well-being is closely linked to a parent’s functioning and success. We believe parenting is an affirmative right--that parents have the right to parent their children, that families have a right to be together, and that children have a right to be with their parents.

If you’re facing a crisis—like losing housing, struggling with your mental health, or just feeling overwhelmed—we can connect you with a community of caring volunteers who want to support you, not judge you.

Safe Families for Children is a group of vetted, trained volunteers who can temporarily care for your children while you take steps to get back on your feet. Whether you need a safe place for your kids to stay, help getting to appointments, or just someone to walk with you through a tough season, we’re here.

Our goal is to help keep your family together. You stay in control, and we work with you every step of the way to help you reach your goals and help your family thrive.

You don’t have to go through this alone.
