Abbott House

Abbott House Hope is Here. Our children and adolescents come from complex, often stressful environments that derail healthy development.

Abbott House builds lasting foundations for children, families, and adults with complex needs, and empowers them with opportunities for promising futures. Since 1963, Abbott House has built lasting foundations for children, adolescents and adults with complex needs throughout the Hudson Valley and New York metropolitan area. Our work builds durable foundations of skills and experiences that allow

them to thrive as individuals, and become future contributors to our community as they come of age. Our adults with developmental disabilities have capacities and strengths often overlooked by their environments. Our work is to identify and build on their strengths, to have them create a strong sense of home, relationship to community, and a personal sense of accomplishment and contribution to others. Our own foundations are constructed on the work of highly skilled staff, community and corporate volunteers, and incredibly generous donors - all with a steadfast commitment to building vibrant futures for our children and adults

Creativity blossomed in our Children's Peace Garden during our latest Poetree Workshop!

Youth spent the day observing and sketching their favorite trees throughout the garden, using colored pencils and watercolor paints to bring their artwork to life. After exploring different forms of poetry, including haikus, free-form poetry, and “I Am…” poems, they added their own original words to their artwork, transforming each piece into a unique reflection of their thoughts, feelings, and observations about nature.

To conclude the workshop, everyone came together to plant a serviceberry tree, a native North American species whose spring blossoms support pollinators and whose summer berries provide food for birds and other wildlife. The tree will serve as a lasting reminder of the day and a living symbol of growth, creativity, and connection to the natural world.

A special thank you to United Paths for donating art supplies and notebooks, and to Dan Alvarez from Sunnyside Federal for joining us as our youth explored the powerful connection between art, poetry, and nature.

Meet Emily Rockefeller, our 2026 Dignity of Family Life Award honoree!

Emily is a community ambassador who understands the impact of shared vision. As one of our Rivertown neighbors, she helped establish Abbott House’s hands-on beekeeping program, hosted on the beautiful grounds of Lyndhurst. Through her creative leadership and generosity, Emily is helping children discover the vital role honeybees play in our world — while also experiencing the confidence, curiosity, and connection that come from learning something new.

Beyond Abbott House, Emily serves on the board for Shoes for a Cure, the Fashion Footwear Charitable Foundation's largest annual fundraiser supporting breast cancer research and awareness. Additionally, she is a member of the Board of Trustees at Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences and the International Council at the Museum of Modern Arts.

Join us on October 27 at Westchester Country Club as we celebrate Emily and her commitment to Abbott House — or send your congratulations with a digital journal ad.

Meet Brionna Sawyer, our 2026 Dr. Joseph M. Pastore, Jr. Difference-Maker Award honoree!

Brionna’s connection to Abbott House began when she was one of the young people we serve. Today, she is giving back to the next generation through her work with our youth leadership program.

Born and raised in New York City, Brionna entered foster care at age nine. A graduate of White Plains High School, she is currently pursuing a degree in Social Welfare at SUNY Albany. Her time as part of the Abbott House community has shaped her passion for supporting others and creating a future rooted in education and advocacy.

Outside of school, Brionna enjoys spending time with friends, exploring new places, and traveling whenever possible. She values connection, personal growth, and new experiences, and hopes her perspective will have a positive impact on the lives of others.

Join us on October 27 at Westchester Country Club as we celebrate Brionna and all that she is accomplishing. You can also send your congratulations by placing a digital journal ad in her honor.

A big thank you to Amy, a 10th grader at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY, who dropped off a generous donation of art supplies on behalf of United Paths last week.

Amy is the Vice President of United Paths, an entirely student-led nonprofit organization that believes in "the transformative power of art as a universal language."

From unitedpaths.org: "Our mission is to create a safe, inclusive space in which aspiring artists can express themselves authentically through art without limits. By providing art education and opportunities, raising funding, and supporting a community that celebrates diversity and creativity, we ensure that all youth, no matter their background, have the chance and materials to discover their voice through the power of art."

Thank you Amy and United Paths for championing the healing power of art!

A little history, a lot of inspiration! Staff and teens from our Mount Kisco QRTP spent the day exploring Washington, D.C.'s Journey Toward Freedom exhibit, proving that learning can be just as exciting as it is meaningful.

Experiences like these combine education with fun while helping young people connect with the world around them. Thank you to our dedicated staff members for always making memories for youth in care!

Yesterday at the Flower to Hive workshop at Lyndhurst Mansion youth filled the bee houses they painted with nesting materials, spotted baby bees tucked away in blooming thyme, and even got the chance to mark bees for identification. Don't worry—this is safe for our bee friends and helps us learn more about them!
