The Irvington Democratic Committee joins the Mayor of Irvington, the Board of Trustees, and Chief of Police Frank Pignatelli in strongly condemning the antisemitic message written in the Metro-North train station tunnel. We affirm their unequivocal denunciation of this hateful act in the strongest possible terms. We also thank them for their leadership and the actions they are taking to bring our community together and ensure the safety of our Jewish community and all Irvington residents.

The Mayor of Irvington, the Board of Trustees, and Chief of Police Frank Pignatelli strongly condemn the antisemitic message written in the Metro-North train station tunnel, a space used daily by our residents and commuters. We unequivocally denounce this hateful act in the strongest possible terms and want our Jewish community and all residents to know that we take this matter with the utmost seriousness. Antisemitism will not be tolerated in Irvington.

The Board of Trustees has been in communication with local Jewish organizations and is organizing community action, bringing together partners to support those affected and reaffirm our shared values as a village.

While the tunnel falls under the jurisdiction of the MTA Police, the Irvington Police Department is actively cooperating to support a full and thorough investigation, and we urge anyone with information to come forward. If you have been affected by this incident, please reach out to the Mayor, any member of the Board of Trustees, or Chief Pignatelli. We are here to listen and support our community.

Today the Irvington Democratic Committee submitted the below letter to Senate Minority Leader Schumer (and a similar letter to Senator Gillibrand) urging him to vote "NO" on a pending DHS funding bill that is woefully inadequate to rein in ICE's abuses.

***

In recent weeks, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has terrorized Minneapolis with a military-style occupation, racial profiling, warrantless searches, and unchecked brutality by masked and heavily armed federal agents, including the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. In light of ICE’s pattern of abusive conduct toward adults and children, we agree with your statement that “[w]hat’s happening in Minnesota is appalling – and unacceptable in any American city.”

Minneapolis is ICE’s latest target following similar abuses in Chicago, Charlotte, and other cities, undermining the rule of law and making us all less safe. With ICE already terrorizing our communities in New York, any of our cities could be next.

We urge you to do everything in your power as Senate Minority Leader to keep Senate Democrats united to ensure that no bill including any further Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding is passed while ICE continues its pattern of violence with impunity nationwide. On January 24, 2026, you stated that “Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included.” We urge you to follow through on that statement and lead all Senate Democrats to oppose additional DHS funding this week.

As your constituents and members of the Irvington Democratic Committee, we urgently need your leadership on this matter.

“Senate Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the D.H.S. funding bill is included,” Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, said in a statement, calling what is unfolding in Minnesota “appalling” and “unacceptable in any American city.”

Key Senate Democrats said they would oppose legislation needed to avoid a government shutdown at the end of the week after federal agents shot and killed a Minneapolis resident.
