This ACEP Section of Membership is dedicated to emergency physicians with special interest and/or expertise in the medical and non-medical management of disasters, mass casualty incidents and mass gathering events.

Between 2000-2011, 154 hospital-related shootings. 59% inside hospital grounds, 235 injured or dead. ED was most common site at 29%, followed by parking lot at 23%, and patient rooms at 19%. Most were motivated by grudge (27%), followed by su***de (21%), followed by “euthanizing an ill relative” (14%), and prisoner escape (11%). Violence from the environment (9%) and mental instability (4%) were relatively infrequent. Non-physician or nurse employees were predominant victims.

Preparation for the threat of violence in healthcare facilities is not optional, it is a persistent threat for which we must have a plan.

As an Emergency Physician, your ED or community will get hit with a disaster of some scale. It is not an "if" but a "when". The following course will help prepare you to achieve a greater understand what is happening around you and your part to prepare and respond to these events.

We are excited to announce the upcoming Mass Casualty Medical Operations Management Course at ACEP22 in San Francisco. We will be doing an "in-person" preconference offering on Friday, September 30, 2022 from 8:00 an-5:30 pm.
