NIADA dealers take 4 policy priorities to Capitol Hill
Independent dealers are meeting with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., during NIADA’s 12th annual National Policy Conference to advocate for four legislative priorities affecting vehicle data access, catalytic converter theft, CFPB oversight and FCRA liability. (NIADA)
– NIADA is urging Congress to advance the REPAIR Act as part of the 2026 surface transportation reauthorization, addressing access to vehicle diagnostic data, repair information and tools.
– Dealers are supporting the bipartisan PART Act, which would establish traceability requirements for new catalytic converters and federal penalties for trafficking stolen converters.
– NIADA is backing changes to CFPB authority, including legislation that would require congressional appropriations for the bureau and establish additional standards for its enforcement authority.
– The association is also advocating for the FCRA Liability Harmonization Act, which would change civil liability standards under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
– The REPAIR Act and PART Act have already advanced through House committee consideration, while H.R. 5775 was reported out of the House Financial Services Committee in June. (NIADA)
– NIADA’s 2026 conference includes direct meetings between dealers and members of Congress, continuing an initiative that produced 123 Capitol Hill meetings in 2025. (NIADA)
The four priorities illustrate the range of federal policy issues independent dealers are bringing directly to lawmakers as Congress considers legislation affecting vehicle repair, dealership compliance and consumer finance.
