Black History Month began in 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week to ensure the history, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans were recognized and taught. In 1976, during the U.S. Bicentennial, the observance officially became Black History Month, celebrated every February.
For the Bear Creek Community, this history is not just something we study. It is something we live, protect, and pass on. Founded in 1964, the West Irving Improvement Association has long served as a foundation for education, unity, and community empowerment in Bear Creek. From early childhood education to today’s community programming, WIIA continues the work of honoring our ancestors.
