Scouting America issued a safeguarding advisory, dated October 6, 2026, about how offenders can misuse publicly available social media content featuring young people to identify and contact them online.

The advisory is meant to raise awareness, not alarm, and it is not meant to discourage anyone from sharing Scouting experiences. It offers practical steps for units, councils, camps, and social media administrators, such as limiting identifying details in posts and knowing how to report concerns. It also offers guidance for parents and Scouts, plus clear steps and trusted resources if a young person has been targeted.

Houston Texans running back David Montgomery, now 29, joined Cub Scouts because his mother wanted to keep him out of trouble. He fell in love with the program and became an Eagle Scout in 2014 as a member of Unit 772, a Black troop in Cincinnati that has produced 40 Eagle Scouts.

He credits Scouting with giving him a strong sense of right and wrong and with supporting him through tough times in high school, and he combined his two passions by running a donation drive at his football games for his Eagle project, benefiting Cincinnati's Mary Magdalen House.

Today he serves as Scouting America's first recruitment ambassador, showing his Scouting pride in the NFL, including wearing his sash into the stadium and flashing the Scout sign after a touchdown in 2024. He hopes his example shows kids, especially Black children, that they can be both a Scout and an athlete, and he is looking forward to taking his 3-year-old son on his first camp outing someday.

Scoutbook Plus has two new Merit Badge Counselor (MBC) features.

Merit Badge Classes - MBCs can now group the youth they counsel into "classes," which work much like patrols. Using Bulk Actions, they can quickly mark requirements complete and approved for the whole class at once.

Merit Badge Counselor Cleanup - Counselors still connected to a Scout will now be removed automatically one year after the merit badge is completed and approved. Any counselors who were still connected more than a year after completion have already been disconnected.

As ScoutConnect Launches Membership Renewal Feature, Online Applications Hit Record Highs

ScoutConnect continues to build on the success of its August BeAScout launch by adding a new feature. Starting today (October 5), self-service Membership Renewal is officially live and ready for use. Scout families now have more ownership over their Scouting journey and a simpler way to stay engaged in the program year over year.

In addition to the launch, ScoutConnect made further updates in September to expand the BeAScout search radius, helping more prospective members find nearby units. Along with the expanded search, the site now lets parents invite a second parent or guardian into the registration process.

The developments come at a great time, as online applications set a new single-day record this past month, exceeding the previous high by more than 10 percent. The results are a strong early sign that more youth are finding their way into character-building Scouting programs.

As ScoutConnect capabilities grow, success will be defined less by raw traffic numbers and more by whether Scouts actively engage with the platform and direct their own advancement by setting goals, tracking progress, and building the responsibility and character the program is designed to instill.

Heading into the fall and end of the year, the team continues to analyze and conduct quality assurance on the new features to ensure a seamless and connected experience for Scouts and their families. With these simplified processes in place, the team can focus more on providing Scouts with the best possible character-building experiences.

As of the most recent report, the online registration system has more than 555 open leads (down 8% since last week) and 19,315 pending applications (up 2% since last week) awaiting follow-up. Each lead represents a family interested in learning more about Scouting, and each pending application is an excited new youth member who has already paid to join and is just waiting for unit approval.

Monday Membership Moment

The first 90 days can make a big difference in whether a new Scouting family feels connected and decides to stay.

For Cub Scout packs, this is the time to focus on the basics. Welcome families, make sure parents know what to expect, create opportunities to get involved, and, most importantly, make sure every new Scout feels like they belong.

A new family does not need a perfect Scouting experience. They need a welcoming one.

This week, take a few minutes to reach out to a new family in your unit. Ask how things are going, answer a question, invite them to the next activity, or simply let them know you are glad they joined.

Small connections early can help build a lasting Scouting experience.

If you missed it earlier, the National Catholic Committee on Scouting has announced it will now be known publicly as Catholic Scouting America, marking a new chapter in a century-old commitment to forming young people in faith, leadership, and service.

Catholic Scouting traces its roots to 1910, and today it supports more than 3,270 troops and over 98,000 Scouts nationwide. The new name is intended to give Catholic families, parishes, and dioceses a clearer picture of the organization's mission, and it aligns with the Boy Scouts of America's own transition to "Scouting America."

Joe Rozell, chairman of the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph, said the previous title often confused parents and the public. He described the updated identity as a journey of "Faith, Family and Adventure."
