Quality measures help EMS agencies understand what's working well and where opportunities for improvement exist.

The Asthma-01 measure focuses on patients experiencing asthma emergencies and helps agencies evaluate whether evidence-based care is being delivered consistently across their system.

Every patient deserves the best possible care, every time.

Every decision in EMS should start with one question:
"What's safest for the patient?"

That includes decisions about when to use lights and sirens.

While they have an important role in emergency response, they also introduce risk.

That's why NEMSQA measures how often EMS agencies safely respond and transport without lights and sirens when appropriate.

Because safety is part of quality care.

When patients think about their care, they often remember how they felt.

For injured patients, pain is one of the most important things EMS can assess and address.

That's why NEMSQA includes a quality measure focused on pain assessment. It's not just about documentation. It's about recognizing a symptom that directly impacts the patient experience.

Quality improvement isn't always about complex interventions. Sometimes it's about making sure the patient's voice is heard.

Every additional airway attempt increases the chance of patient harm.

The collaborative reinforced what many clinicians already know:
Repeated attempts can lead to worsening hypoxia, hypotension, and preventable deterioration.

The goal isn’t “keep trying.”

The goal is:
one deliberate, optimized best attempt.

That means:
✔ oxygenation first
✔ clear backup plans
✔ knowing when to stop and reset

Quality airway management is patient-centered airway management.

When blood sugar drops too low, every minute matters.

Hypoglycemia can quickly affect a person's ability to think clearly, communicate, or care for themselves. That's why timely recognition and treatment are so important.

The NEMSQA Hypoglycemia Measure helps EMS agencies evaluate whether patients experiencing low blood sugar are receiving the care they need when they need it most.

Most of us don't think much about breathing until it suddenly becomes difficult.
For someone experiencing an asthma attack, those moments can feel frightening and overwhelming. That's why timely care matters.

The Asthma-01 quality measure helps EMS agencies evaluate whether patients experiencing an asthma emergency are receiving important treatment during their care.

By measuring what happens in the field, EMS systems can identify opportunities to improve care for future patients.

When most people see lights and sirens, they assume every second counts.

But research shows that using lights and sirens often saves less time than many people think, while increasing the risk of crashes for EMS crews, patients, and the public.

In EMS, quality care means balancing urgency with safety.

Pain is one of the most common experiences for injured patients.

Before it can be treated, it has to be recognized.

One NEMSQA quality measure looks at whether EMS clinicians assessed and documented pain for injured patients during transport.

It sounds simple, but small steps like asking about pain and documenting the response help create better patient experiences and better care.

Sometimes quality improvement starts with the basics.

When we talk about airway quality, it’s easy to focus on the moment of intubation.

But the collaborative showed something important:
The best airway outcomes started long before the first attempt.

Pre-oxygenation. Positioning. Role assignment. Equipment readiness. Shared team planning.

First-pass success isn’t just operator skill.

It’s system preparation.

That shift in thinking changes everything.

Some of the most critical moments in EMS happen during airway management.

They’re high-risk, high-stakes, and often unforgiving.

That’s exactly why NEMSQA launched the Airway Improvement Collaborative through the EMS Quality Improvement Partnership (EQuIP): to bring EMS organizations together to improve airway care through shared learning, practical quality improvement, and measurable change.

Over 18 months, 60 EMS organizations participated, contributing:
✔ 7,612 data points
✔ 114 change ideas tested
✔ 161 shared training and operational tools

The focus:
• improving first-pass intubation success without hypoxia or hypotension
• increasing reliable waveform capnography use
• improving oxygen administration for hypoxic patients

This project is about helping EMS systems build safer processes, stronger teams, better feedback loops, and ultimately better patient outcomes.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing lessons, insights, and practical takeaways from the collaborative.

Because quality improvement works best when we learn together.
