What could be a better start of Memorial Day weekend than to build a house in Tecate, Mexico? On Saturday, Irvine Rotarians Jutta and Jesús Gamboa went down to Tecate with San Clemente Rotarian, founder and organizer of Dust Club Ray Meltvedt and 12 other dedicated helpers in “the whale,” the vehicle used in the recent Friendship Exchange! Hammering, painting, sawing, laying bricks, drawing and assembling filled the day to supply a young family with a cute house and a bunk bed. The bunk bed got filled with donated blankets and plush animals for the kids.
The activities ended with a stop at the best street taco vendor before crossing the border again! A full day for sure!

Congratulations to all our excellent Irvine high school students who participated in and won scholarships in the Irvine Rotary "Service Above Self" awards earlier this month. This event challenges high school students to come up with their own Rotary project which benefits their community. The ideas are always excellent and innovative. The future is bright with so many wonderful students.

"Kissed Within an Inch of Her Life!" Past president Anabella Bonfa was at the Rotaract booth at the South County Rotary 5320 Route for mental health meeting with dogs entering the "Most Friendly" contest.

Is it any wonder that Cisca Stellhorn's 7 month old Lab "Mel" won the "Friendliest Dog" award? Look at this pup in action. She is a LOVE MACHINE on steroids!

"Doggone Cute!" Soka Rotaract and UCI Rotaract and interactors from throughout Rotary District 5320 ran the cutest booth at the Rotary District 5320 Route for Mental Health last weekend. The booth, which focused on how dogs improve your mental health, featured a doggie photo booth, prizes for "Friendliest Dog", "Most Photogenic Dog" and "Best Tricks" and focused on how dogs improve depression and loneliness and improve mental health. Rotaractors encouraged visitors to leave a note on the dog tree describing how their dogs improved their mental health. Rotaractors also handed out dog disaster kit lists.

Members of Irvine Rotary had a fun and meaningful outing to “The Cove“ today on Newport Shores Drive in Newport Beach! The Cove was established in 2018 by Mercy House and provides a home for veterans! Our club members were invited to a pre-Memorial celebration taco lunch as the club has supported Mercy House with Welcome Home Baskets for years! Navy veteran, Dale Forde came out to enjoy conversations and lunch, as well as project leaders Jutta and Jesús Gamboa.
The three are grateful to have been included in the scrumptious lunch and for the opportunity to mingle with several residents like Glenn who now works as a Santa Claus and Dr Anthony, a fellow Navy veteran of Dale. The yummy lunch was prepared by the ‘Tacoman!’

He spent years protecting strangers.

Now he's finally getting a place to call home.
When a veteran walks through that door for the first time — there's a basket waiting. Towels. Dishes. The small things that make a house feel like a home.
Irvine Rotary put it there.
Because no one who served this country should start from zero alone.

🤝 We show up for our veterans - every time.

"Don't Mess with Her!" The Irvine Rotary and Irvine Police Department Annual Public Safety Award is given to one citizen of Irvine and one police officer per year who make Irvine a safer city through their own personal actions. Our citizen honoree was Savannah Locke, a college student. Savannah saw an elderly citizen being beaten by a thief trying to steal her purse. Savannah, who is a fencing competitor at her college and fearless woman jumped in, engaging in a physical altercation with the attacker to save the elderly citizen.

The Irvine Police Department honoree was Officer Jason Schaefer, who has provided numerous hours of instruction and leadership on the ebike front, teaching students to ride in safety and working on safety riding techniques. Officer Schaefer said he thinks of his own family when representing the City of Irvine and he brought his beautiful daughters and wife to the event.

Irvine Rotary and their 2 Rotaract clubs, UCI Rotaract and Soka Rotaract were well represented at RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp) in Idyllwild, California, where high school students congregate to learn leadership skills, bond and break barriers across different cultural levels. Split into "color" teams, students learn to form a team and work together to solve mutual goals. All preconceived ideas about who might be your "friend" by the end of camp are put aside and lifelong friendships are formed. Thanks to photographer Gerardo Chagolla for contributing some great photos to our collection. Irvine Rotarians Cisca Stellhorn, Felix Trinh, Bridget Markwood and many members of the Irvine Satellite Club are main forces behind RYLA.
