Hip Hop Congress at UCI was founded to bring out voices. Voices of the crate diggers, voices of the hip hop heads, voices of the lyricists, and the voices of anyone trying to get their message out. We brought out artists such as Blu, MC Supernatural, Dom Kennedy, that we felt embodied these voices and brought forth what we saw as real elements of hip hop. Voices that weren't afraid to speak out on polarizing issues. Voices that didn't care about sacrificing radio play if it meant that they could speak their minds.
However, these past few years, with our own numbers dwindling, we haven't been there to provide these voices. With tensions concerning topics of race growing throughout the nation, and right here at UC Irvine, we feel that we have failed in our founding message to let your thoughts be heard and for that we would like to apologize. We are here to make sure that the culture we love isn't degraded down to just twerking and industry radio bu****it. We're here to start a conversation. We're here to hear you out. We're here to emphasize what made us fall in love with this culture.
With all that being said we would like to shoot this invite out to all of you. If you want people to hear your beats, rhymes, voice, whatever...let us know and we'll try to start the conversation with the small following that we have.
But for now let's talk about Kendrick Lamar's new album To Pimp a Butterfly *cough* album of the year *cough* decade *cough*
Did you love it? Did you hate it? Let's start the discussion.
