Monroe County STOP DWI & Traffic Safety and Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo call on High School students in our community to showcase their creativity and impact change with our spring 2026 PSA Contest!
Students pick the type of media and the message,
we pick the winners and help promote the PSA. The
goal with the PSA will be to educate our community on the importance of safe driving choices during what is known nationally as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer between Memorial and Labor Day holidays! With this we want to encourage safety and the desire for no more deaths with “100 Days of Safe Summer Roads”!

Last year, the director of the IPL approached WBI to ask how the library could be more supportive of and welcoming to bikers. One idea that came up was to have a circulating bike repair kit at the library. Last week, the IPL launched that kit, complete with a bit of WBI co-branding! The kit is great, and we are very grateful to the library staffers that put this project together.

WBI has launched a petition asking that the town move to adopt universal 25 MPH speed limits on all town-controlled roads. We need to make our streets safer for kids, for older adults, for bikers, and for all road users, including those behind the wheel! For clarification: many major roadways and highways in town are controlled by the county or the state, but the town controls speeds for most others. The state allows towns to adopt 25 MPH speed limits on town roads, but towns must follow a number of steps first. Read more at the petition link, and sign on if you agree.

Make Irondequoit’s Neighborhood Streets Safer: Adopt a 25 MPH Speed Limit on Town Roads

You may have heard that Irondequoit was recently awarded $4.5 million from the state's NY Forward program. Below, you'll find a link to the town's application to the state. Among other things, the town lists a number of projects to make pedestrian safety enhancements, and to make streetscape improvements. A large portion of the text of the application alludes to the need for the town to make improvements to walkability/bikeability, public transportation, sustainability, etc. Since the state awarded these funds partially on the understanding that those priorities would be funded, it will be important for advocates to push the town to prioritize our concerns when it is selecting projects and spending these funds. To cite a recent example in Fairport, the town opted against making improvements to pedestrian and bike safety when using a state grant that had been partially premised on those sorts of changes. Check out the application document, and be sure to contact the town board to let them know that you want them to prioritize making streets safer when spending the NY Forward grant funds.

The city of Rochester is exploring the return of traffic cameras. It’s part of the city’s Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities.

This month, the public is invited to give feedback on the subject. We explore the pluses and minuses with our guests:

-Mitch Gruber, co-chair of the ROC Vision Zero Committee and member of Rochester City Council
- David Riley, principal transportation specialist for the city of Rochester
- Luis Burgos, resident of North Clinton Avenue, among many other community roles
- Cody Donahue, co-executive director of Reconnect Rochester
- Erick Stephens, parent engagement specialist for the Healthi Kids initiative at Common Ground Health and proud Charlotte resident

Please join WBI on Wednesday, May 20th at 7pm in room 114 of the IPL for a workshop/discussion about how to make Irondequoit streets safer for kids. All are welcome.

Among other things, we'll be discussing Reconnect Rochester's new(ish) multimodal advocacy toolkit, which you can find at the link below, and which can be used to inform our strategy and tactics in pursuit of the goal of making our streets safer for kids, and everyone else, too!
